Kumho Tire U.S.A. notified us today they have chosen to voluntarily recall all ECSTA V710 tires. If you still have ECSTA V710 tires (new, used or even worn out), Kumho has authorized us to exchange them on a one-for-one basis with an enhanced version of the ECSTA V710 when it becomes available in approximately 60-90 days.
In order to compensate you for any inconvenience, as well as mounting and balancing costs, Kumho has further authorized us to provide either ECSTA V700 or VictoRacer V700 tires, again on a one-for-one basis, at no final cost to you. Since ECSTA V700 and VictoRacer V700 tires require tread shaving for use in dry conditions, shaving will be available at no charge. Heat Cycling will also be included at no charge if your ECSTA V710 tires were heat cycled by the Tire Rack originally.
The Tire Rack Team wants to help you replace your voluntarily recalled tires as quickly and conveniently as possible. If you still have new, used or worn out ECSTA V710 tires:
Contact the Tire Rack representative indicated on your original invoice, or call (800) 428-8355 and asking for the first available sales representative.
Provide the phone number where your credit card bills are received, the invoice number of your ECSTA 710 purchase and/or your name.
Identify the quantity of new, used or worn out ECSTA V710 tires you will be exchanging.
The Tire Rack representative will establish a no-charge backorder at The Tire Rack for the enhanced ECSTA V710 tires when they become available, as well as place an order for your ECSTA V700 or VictoRacer V700 tires. We will charge your credit card when we ship your ECSTA V700 or VictoRacer V700 tires.
Contact a Tire Rack representative when your ECSTA V710 tires are dismounted and ready to be picked up by the UPS representative and we will issue the required number of prepaid UPS Pick-up Labels for you to return your ECSTA V710 tires.
Upon the return of your ECSTA V710 tires, we will credit the full value of ECSTA V700 or VictoRacer V700 tires to the credit card used to purchase them.
The Tire Rack apologizes for any inconvenience this causes.

Yea !!!! I ordered a set last week and I got this email today !!
quote:
Hi Reza, The tire you ordered has been recalled by Kumho and we do not have any available. They are reformulating the tire and we should have them in about 4 weeks. If you want to switch to a different tire let me know.
Thank you and sorry about the delay.

damn!
And I was seriously considering a purchase a few weeks ago. Now I'm not sure whether to be glad or not.
Has anyone heard of, or had any problems?
hehe... I wonder who/how many are getting fired at Kumho for this blunder.

Its not blunder.
The tires are over-performing thus many people using this are winning over Hoosier by many seconds.
I think it is a conspiracy by some people competing to make the tire formula comparable to other tires e.g. S04 or S03

Uh, no it's because the tires are coming apart. Danger Will Robinson, death, mayhem, etc. There were some pictures on the honda-tech board.
They seem to hold up to a couple weekends of autocross, but they are disintegrating at track days.

And DamonB, there is still no hope. It just means you'll get a few extra weeks before they start winning again

I was going around poking tires after runs and a hot V710 is almost like chewing gum; that's no exageration. My Victoracers felt good but were no where near as soft when hot as the 710. If they made them in my size I would have had them too...

Reminds me of a story I read, written by Leo Mehl (I think), Goodyear's race tire director/manager/thingy.
Said he was with Ford at the 24 Hours of LeMans. One driver comes in, says the car is handling kinda funny. Leo looks down at the tires, they are completely bare, no rubber at all, just casing where the tread should be. Had to look two-three times because he didn't believe what he was seeing. One more lap and the driver would have wrecked or worse. Instant summoning of all Ford race cars to the pits for a tire change...

The 710 is now illegal for any SCCA event.

I think it's the right move. If Kumho themselves have declared the tire unsafe then the right thing to do is to not allow it in competition while the recall is in progress. The banning is not automatically suspended however when Kumho returns the tire to market.
From the Kumho website:
IMPORTANT NOTICE FOR ECSTA V710 TIRES
KUMHO Tire's priority is safety, and we are committed to supplying our customers with the highest quality and best performing tires that are available anywhere in the world. It is with this philosophy in mind that KUMHO is taking immediate action in discontinuing the sale of the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire.
The V710 has won several races and set numerous track records since it was introduced into the market on January 1, 2004. Although we have not experienced any air loss failures with the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire, we have discovered some inconsistent test results relating to tread splice and tread area durability.
The sale of the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire will, therefore, be discontinued immediately, and tires in use in the market will be collected from consumers. KUMHO will replace them with either the KUMHO ECSTA V700 or Victoracer tire free of charge.
An investigation into the cause of the inconsistencies has been carried out and modifications to the product and production methods have been made to ensure these inconsistencies do not re-occur.
Consumers who have purchased the ECSTA V710 Competition Tire must call the dealer where the tires were purchased or the following toll free number to arrange for tire return and replacement :
1-800-445-8646 Extension 342
Consumers will be given the choice of a free replacement of the ECSTA V710 with either the ECSTA V700 or Victoracer. They will also be provided a free set of the modified ECSTA V710 upon its arrival.
KUMHO is sincerely committed to the quality of our products and the total satisfaction of our customers. We regret any inconvenience to our customers

Ahhh but don't you wish you'd gotten the 710s so you could have a set of Victoracers now AND a set of the new "improved"710s when they come out?
I know I do.

Nope, I have no room for extras, no trailer, and

Wait... I thought the option was EITHER V700/Victoracer one-for-one, *or* waiting until the redesigned V710's come out, not *both*.
I know I'd be pissed if I bought some V710's, had them recalled, and was tireless until the redesigned models came out - the rationale for the exchange for V700/Victoracer.
This is as I read it, anyway.

Kumho is saying to return the 710's you bought and we will give you Victoracers or V700's; whichever you prefer. Then when the 710 is available once again we'll ship them to you FREE.
That means if you had bought 710's you return them from free tires in the mean time and then get another free set of 710's later.

Yeha, you return them, get a set of V700s, and get a free set of 710s when they are fixed.. I can't see how you lose on that deal. Wow.
Sucks for Kumho that it happened, but I'm very happy to see them stand behind their tires.

yeah... Kumho is giving out free v700's or victoracers to compensate for shipping, mounting and balancing costs and also supposedly going to replace the old V710s with new and improved V710s

The big question is whether or not their eligibility will be reinstated once the manufacturing problem is resolved. I imagine that the tire will go through another round of testing and some more vigorous durability checks.
And that is making a big ASSumption that the new batch gets fixed and shipped within the advertised 60-90 days. IF it takes longer, the V710 may not be eligible for Nationals and/or the Runoffs. But for now, I'm happy to ge getting my Victoracers/V700's for free and a new set of V710's when they get everything square. Now that I think about it .... hmmm, save the Victo/V700's for rains and play with the new A3SO4???
