EP or ITA class car build questions?

Look into the NASA classes, or look into SCCA's STU. STU for a 1st gen RX-7 is essentially IT with looser suspension, drivetrain and brake rules, and with EP engine rules... which honestly sounds sort of like how you want to build the car anyway. Because they're still running DOT tires, at least locally they seem to get put into the same race groups as bigger IT stuff. EP on the other hand (at least with who we run with) gets stuck into the same race group as GT-1 and other tube chassis go-fast stuff. So for more or less the same car, it would work out to a difference between having something that could run midpack in a class that's at the pointy end of its race group, or something that would be towards the back of the pack in a class that's the slowest in its race group. Getting passed by GT-1 cars doesn't seem fun.

If you want to go faster for less money then SCCA STL looks like allot of fun to me. If the STL rules had matured to where they are now I would not have built an STU car.
As far as speed is concerned - it is all relative. If you are racing another car door to door, nose to tail it doesn't matter how fast you are going. Try diving into turn one at Gateway Intl running 105+ with another car. Is that exciting - hell yes because you will be on the edge of control. Will it impress your drinking buddies at the bar....maybe not. But in my experience most drinking buddies run out of guts really fast when you put a helmet on their head and tell them go racing with a pack of 30+ cars.
The advantage that IT has is that you are much more likely to find yourself in an intense dice for a position than you are in EP, STU and STL. There simply are more cars on the track to play with.
As far as ITA and IT7 is concerned - these cars typically have the same prep requirements. This can vary by Division but in Midiv there are no differences in prep allowance between ITA and IT7.
Regarding the cost of a nationally competitive EP car.....I think you can do this for 20-30K if you do all of your own work and you can drive. The car the won the EP runoffs in 2011 was built in KC and maintained in the shop I work from. It was not a terribly expensive car. Same is true for the cars built by the late Tom Thrash. The difference in those scenarios is that the drivers have/had TALENT!

Thanks for all the input fellas. I just cut out all the work and found a fully previously winning SPU ISSCA built car (minus the motor and trans)... I think I won the race car lottery on this one ...

This is the roller I bought. All I'm missing now is the pedal assembly and my motor's not finished yet. This was an spu icscc car.
