20B powered FD in Top 10 Trans-AM Series: supporting mods ?
Glen Jung and Rotary X-Treme Team/MazdaSpeed/Goodyear #77 RX7 placed 4th at Road Atlanta this September 2010, in GT1 Trans-Am series.
His car is a FD, supposedly powered by a 20B, going against 650+HP Corvettes, with over 500 ft-lb torque!
The FD was previously a peripheral-port 13B (at most 330HP), and he finished in the Top 10 last year!
Anyone know the supporting mods for this car ?
Does anyone have links to this team, this car, and this Trans-Am race ?
Thanks,
:-) neil

IIRC, that's just a tube-framed GT1 car which he's running in Trans-Am. It's just a PP 20B which is a little over 300rwhp. He's not all that competitive in that class given the power he's giving up put he does crack the top 10 every know and then:

Here's an excerpt from a 2009 article:
"Finally, if you’re looking for an underdog, look no further than the No. 77 Mazdaspeed/Goodyear Mazda RX-7 of Glen Jung. While light and nimble, Jung’s rotary-powered RX-7 is giving up more than 300hp to some of the bigger V8s, but still managed a ninth-place finish at Atlanta. On a dry track, he may not be a factor, but if it rains, the front of the field could take on a very unexpected look."

I've seen this car at a couple of scca national events at homestead. when I saw it, he was still running the 2 rotor, what hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread is how this guy drives the doors off this car. he is very underpowered (even with the new engine, 3 rotor), yet he always seems to do well. I hope to see him again this year at homestead. I wonder how much weight they added for the new motor. If I remember correctly it goes from 1800ish to 2100ish going from a 2 rotor to a 3 rotor.

From the various images posted above, I find it interesting how he has developed the aero of the bodywork:
1) Venting the air out of the front end of the car to make front down force. Notice that the vents moved around some
2) The windshield and A pillars appear to be very curved, cutting aero drag significantly
3) the rear wing is placed very far aft, which puts a lot of down force behind the rear wheels. In order to stay aero balanced, his front end must be making a lot of downforce too, or else that very aft rear wing would lift weight off his front wheels as he got up to high speed ( I learned this lesson the hard way when I stuck a wing very far to the back of my old 1st gen to run in an unlimited road race once. The wing made so much downforce at high speed, that I could turn the steering wheel and the car would not turn :0 ) So Glen Jung must be getting a lot of down force from his front end configuration to work with that very rearward back wing
4) The rear side edges of the car are nice and sharp, not rounded off. This helps the air flowing down the sides of the car break cleanly off the back of the car and not hang on to the back of the car.
5) vents at the rear of the roof - I haven't noticed these on anybody else's car before

I heard a rumor that they were thinking about letting him turbo or supercharge it... Not sure what he's planning on doing, but some more power is definitely needed to be super competitive with those high hp v8's..

The car finished fourth in 2010 Toronto Indy FYI
Hope you don't mind if I share some photos I took of it. The car sounds amazing amongst those v8s that all sound identical.

I was at Road Atlanta this year for the trans am race. That car sounded soooooo good, so much better than those stupid V8's in that series. After the race I went and hung around the car hoping that I could chat with somebody to find out some more info about it but nobody came out of the trailer.

I'll share what I know about the car, which unfortunately isn't a ton.. 20B PPort built by Glen himself (new in 2010), Motec M600 tuned by my boss, Paul Yaw, bosch coils, 6x ID1000's, somewhere around 2200lbs, and lots of tire. Since the car is so light with less power, he doesn't tear up tires like the v8 guys, so usually will get quicker in the field as the race goes on.
