PowerFC + Datalogit + LC-1 Wideband Install first-time

IT'S ALL ABOUT THE GROUNDS

This is just an experience piece for first-time installers.

I was tired of the half-assed tuning with the SAFC and the Wolf 3D v4 PnP for S5 I had had absolutely no install instructions and at the time I could find zero basemaps for the install. I decided to bite the bullet and go PowerFC. After researching I found Banzai Racing's excellent S5 harness and install instructions, do I ordered everything from Chris. He installed an excellent base map based on my mods.

The igniter mod is pretty stragihtforward, just keep rereading the instructions carefully.

Installing the FD AIT sensor was simple enough once you buy the correct tap and bit.

Swapping the stock boost sensor with the 3 Bar MAP sensor is pretty straightforward.

The unit powered up the first time I tried it with no errors so I was ready to install the Datalogit and LC-1 wideband. The datalogit is just a matter of plugging it into the PowerFC and plugging the commander into the provided port on the Datalogit.

The fun began when I installed the LC-1 and tried to get it to work with the Datalogit and PowerFC. After I installed and calibrated everything according to instructions I fired up the LC-1 and connected it to my Macbook Pro running Win7 in Coherence mode. No go. The LC Programmer app did not see the LC-1 at the serial port using the Serial>USB adapter.

I went through the routine of drivers, dongles and laptops to no avail. After researching it more and more on the Innovate site I determined that the problem was in the grounds. According to instructions, you are supposed to put the blue and white grounds from the LC-1 into an2 port on the Datalogit. This wasn't working.

I found that by soldering on an extension to the combined blue and white grounds and grounding that lead onto the same stud as PowerFC ground was the way to go. Then run another ground lead from the same ECU ground point back to the AN2 port on the Datalogit.

The LC Programmer immediately saw the LC-1 and I was able to set it up for use with the Datalogit.

Yes, it's unfortunate that the datalogit cannot accept true digital information over a serial connection. So you get stuck with the grounding hassle. Innovate has a serial output and so does AEM wideband (except for the AEM one with the needle gauge display). Tuning software for newer platforms (Cobb, ECU Flash for Subaru/Mitsu) can read a serial input.

Maybe it has more to do with you using a mac/win7 hybrid instead of the installation itself?

I just have a standard pc using vista, and my LC-1 fired up right away installing it the way the manual says. The only thing I had to do was ground the an2 when installing the datalogit.

The biggest issue I had was the disparity between the LC-1 reading and the DL reading of the AFR's. The DL was constantly about .4-.5 lower. After re-grounding and adjusting the LC-1 gauge I got it to within .2 at the most, so now it's good.
