pfc kisked my *** today
now usually, i'm really good at figuring things out, so i took a job tuning a pfc--that was my first mistake. i'd never seen a haltech before when i installed mine. it took a day to wire up and fire up--i even tuned some of the low-load stuff.
i'm knowledgable on tuning--not a super guru or anything, but good enough to avoid the no-no's and get good power reliably.
so i get there and used jususcookie's laptop and dataloggit to hook up to the computer. i tried manipulating the maps--it looked like it saved the changes, but hte a/fr's didn't change at all. i tried eveything i could think of, but it just wouldn't change a thing with the car.
the only way i could get ANYTHING to happen was from the individual injector bias--that worked, but nothing else.
i should mention i tried both the laptop and the commander...same story. i tried hitting both the write and write all buttons in every combination i could think of. i tried things just how the manual said...
so we tried some freeway tuning... thinking that it may accept those changes.yea right. it was running 9's the whole way! i pulled fuel out of the map....no change. pulled fuel out of the injector trims, that worked!!!!! for like 3 minutes, then it went back to zero on its own...
so it was getting late and i accepted defeat for the day...
has anyone experienced anything similar with their pfc? i have to go back and do it now--just because it pissed me off!!
now if this turns out to be a bunk computer, i'll feel better about myself, but it's gotta be something dumb and simple i'm missing.

i think i know what happened on the second run.... i told David! i think the commander hit the button on the labtop and started to "write all" because when i tried to move the cursor, it was an hourglass so that might have been the problem.... im 99% sure!

My computer mouse is set to super sensitive. All you have to do is run it over a selection sometimes and it will automatically select.
the only thing we didn't really try is the rpm/load settings with just the commander--there's no reference to tell where you are.
if someone else knows how to adjust the maps, we can all meet up and i'll just bring the wideband back down and learn.

It could be the car. If running AFRs in the 9's and very low 10's, I have seen the need to pull way more fuel than calculated, way more by like 10%. I guess the w/b is simply less accurate at that low of an AFR or the fuel is burning in the turbo and the readings are not accurate.
Other thing to think about is misfire. Misfire can screw you when tuning, bigtime. I have seen situation where I kept pulling out fuel with no change in the AFRs. After a bit I wondered what was up, so a started looking at the AFR range in each cell, the PFC reports many AFRs during a run in each cell and there is valuable info there. If you see a big range from min to max in one or more cells, misfire is the likely culprit and you need to fix ignition before porceeding. Running AFRs in the 9's may be the cause of the misfire, so tread lightly before pulling 10+% of fuel out of it. Rule of thumb that I tune by is 1% of fuel is about a 0.1 AFR change. If I pull a couple of % fuel out I better see a change in the AFRs if the car is running in the high 10s and up.

i took 65% out with no change to the afr's...
(i made sure he loaded up the map he had before i got there)...just in case it decided to take all of a sudden and run way too lean.
but how youe change the settings on the fuel map....
let's say i highlighted a particular section--then hit the down arrow to take fuel away. hit write or write all or --correct? or is there something else i need to do to get it to "accept" the changes?
thanks

When tuning from the commander you have to highlight the cell with the arrow keys, hit next, then you go to the page where it shows you the n and p values for that cell, and then the fuel correction number. If you just hit up or down, you will change to the adjacent cells, You must hit next again to change that number, then change that number with the up and down arrows, then hit next again. The new number should propagate where the old number was (bottom left corner) Now that cell is changed. Now do the same for the remaining cells and you are tuned.
Don't know about the datalogit or the computer. Havent used those yet, although I do have the power excel software, just haven't messed with it.

Most widebands don't read any richer than 9-10. Is it possible that you just haven't pulled enough fuel out yet?
Also, (I know this is an obvious one but.. ) if you're using the map watch to view AFRs, make sure that the Max. Val in the upper right-hand corner is set to a number larger than expected AFRs.. like 15. If it was sitting on 10 that could explain what's happening.. you just wouldn't be seeing the expected readings.
Fc1jz: You have the power Excel software? As in, branded from Apex? Or did you mean the Datalogit software?

Can you elaborate on this one? I do not think this is something we did

I have this problem, couldn't lean out the idle/low rpm cells no matter how much fuel i took out.
It changed a little but not very much even pulling 50% out.Yes i did it correctly also.
Having said that i only tried for a short while having just got the car running after rebuild/ single turbo.
Reducing the fuel correction percentage helped more but still not enough.
I'll be trying again soon as i get time will let you know what happens.

Sure.. Highlighted in the pic is the value I was speaking of. It tells the map watch to ignore values larger than this number for the statistics kept.. It's handy for ignoring say AFRs > 17 because you're just about assured that you're on decel or cruise. This way when you look at the AVG readings they're not polluted with decel numbers.
I was just saying that if you had this number at say, 10, you wouldn't see results leaner than 10. (I did this by accident one day and got all kinds of confused. I leaned the **** out of the map looking for a change until it ran like comlete *** and I compared the display on my wideband to the display on the computer and realized I was a boob.)
Did that help?

i think we're getting on the right track. but did you have the wideband hooked up to the dataloggit?
we had my tech edge running in "stand alone" mode--just for the visual reference.

I honestly just think Roman hit the read all button a second time, and caused the old map to be reloaded. I say we give it another try next weekend.
what do you say?

I have experienced as well as others a problem with the datalogit displaying and reading from the wrong column and row. It is usually one row off. What happens is that you pull fuel from the wrong cell due to the map trace being off by one row. Then you make a run and nothing changed. I spent like 1hr trying to pull out fuel with no effect. All I can guess is that I was pulling fuel out of the wrong cells becuse of this problem.
Do some searching for this info as it is better covered and understood than from me. I will be doing the same as I hope to be setting my GT4or kit up if it ever gets here.

but it doesn't matter cuz it still didn't work.
i'm up for giving it another go... i can't stand not being able to do something!!!! i can usually figure stuff out faster than anyone i know, so this is turning into a pride issue. LOL
i may have a clutch job next weekend, and i have to finish building that fd motor , so time may become scarce... any chance of doing it at night sometime?
