Newb Q: Does the Datalogit need the commander to connect to the PFC?
Hi,
I'm new to FDs and PFCs but not to tuning (run an AEM in my Toyota). I've read the PFC FAQ, and I'm going to be getting a PFC in the next month or so (new or used, if I can find a deal) and really could care less about the Commander. I want to be able to attach my laptop and tune.
Assuming I get a deal on a used PFC, can I order just the Datalogit and everything will work fine?
If so, does anybody that owns both a Datalogit and a Commander use the commander? Is it mostly just for a digital display of parameters?

Q1: Assuming I get a deal on a used PFC, can I order just the Datalogit and everything will work fine?
A1: Hardware and software wise, YES. Tune wise, NO. You will have to have the engine tuned for proper timing, AFRs, etc.
Q2: If so, does anybody that owns both a Datalogit and a Commander use the commander?
A2: I use the commander all the time for monitoring IC outlet air temperature, and knock levels. Being that our apex seals are the weak point, the commander is useful to view knock periodically, especially after filling up the gas tank incase you got some bad fuel.
Q3: Is it mostly just for a digital display of parameters?
A3: The commander can be used for simple tuning of a stock or close to stock engine, not for a very modded high HP engine. The DL is the only way to totally tune the PFC even for a stocker. Their are parameters that only can be adjusted with the DL that also benefit a stocker. The commander is still useful for tuning idle, cold start table , etc.

Apexi Japan bundles the Commander in with the PFC for free. Many vendors on Ebay have been selling brand new PFC's with Commanders for $650ish - that's one helluva deal.
