Does anyone have a data sample from the Power FC they could send me?
I'm currently trying to get an interface produced to link a Race Technology Dash 2 to the Apexi, so you can ditch the standard clocks and datalog too!

Any help or suggestions would be most welcome, thanks!

Interesting - I'm working on a datalogit-less system as well -
Any protocol information would be wonderful - I'm sorting out a basic USB interface at the moment...
Cheers,
Edwin

Wow, has it been six years ago now? Not many remember the "hacking the datalogit" thread. A quick search turns up this thread from 03.
https://www.rx7club.com/power-fc-forum-47/hacking-powerfc-datalogit-147597/

I guess this thread is from 3 years ago...

But there are other resources that aren't specific to the RX-7 that should also help you out:

Thanks! - I'm gradually collating all the information to produce as much of a definitive document as possible...

Glad to see and answer on some old threads : - I'm also registered on some of the ECU specific forums, there's a lot of people wanting a lot of things from this sort of solution - I'm going to be specific in my goals to start with.

I'm actually a Subaru owner, but with the Power FC. My lack of hand commander has forced me to consider how on earth to do live monitoring and other configuration of my Power FC.
To this end, I'm resurrecting the intentions of producing a cheap, open source (including hardware) interface and software.

I'm an electronics engineer, and an embedded systems software engineer, and think I may be well placed to dig into this.

Project goals in order:
1. Build or source a working, reliable, safe, interface for under 30 UKP
2. Encode the already published command structure into a linux/ OS/X - based (its what I know) API for talking to the ECU
3. Perform basic live monitoring of ECU parameters
4. Perform high level configuration of ECU
5. Perform fuel map analysis
6. Produce a decent GUI.

If there are any mad coders out there, or anyone with the source code that can be adopted easily from previous projects (this is to be a GPL project), I'd love to hear from them.

Lets get this thing done!

Look what I just found:

http://www.firmwarefactory.com/Docs/USB-I2C%20HW145.pdf

Available for a fiver (UK Pounds) from Farnell /DigiKey

Its a full I2C *slave* unit, with external analogue inputs.
its not open source firmware, but its a part that is easily available...

I'm obtaining one, and will be evaluating very shortly..

I'm also working with an Atmel part that's cheaper and easier for me to code.

NeXTgen,

I am in the process of collecting as much information at the moment as well. I was looking into the possibility of making my own solution, but as yet I haven't got very far. Maybe we could compare notes. I have some stuff in Japanese that I am hoping a friend will be able to translate for me.

If I can help out with the project, let me know.

The more the merrier!
I've got the parts to make the PIC evaluation circuit coming from Farnell, total cost 18 pound for two units :-)
The key aspects required to get started is the low level wire protocol (I2C Slave addresses etc) which I think I've pulled from the japanese site, but any more would be appreciated!

Next is to build up, probably from Goblin's posting (as its public published) the link layer protocol - and get some basic communication going.

My next target is to collect real time data. I know a lot of people want tuning and maps, but I want to see if I can do protocol translation as well (for connection to other digi-dashes, including home brew!)

I'd love any help anyone has to offer,
Cheers,
Edwin

NeXTGen, you should start a new thread stating your "open source" intentions and see who would like to help. There has been a lot of brillant ideas on here over the years (and lots of desire) but no one has put it all together yet. I believe the holy grail for any PFC interface will be some sort of auto tuning A/F feature, it seems easy in theory but has yet to be done. Good luck! I'll be keeping tabs, this is very interesting.

Will do.. watch for the new thread :-)
I'm starting with the baby steps of just talking to the Power FC first :-)
Thanks,
Edwin

Wow - it's been a while! :-)

Long story short, I've been busy the past couple of years (surfing mostly!). In the meantime, my project car was dinged up by some fool in a Mazda 323 packed with his wife and two kids who was travelling at speed on a very narrow country road. That kinda stalled the ball for me... :-(

I haven't had the time or means really to fix up the car (cosmetic damage), it was actually my software development platform "on wheels", so to speak. I will however, resurrect this project if there is sufficient interest.

Dude, why don't you turn it into an open source project? Plenty of us have expressed an interest in moving the development forward. Unless you plan to make a small fortune (a very small fortune), you could open it up and see the code flourish at the hands of other worker bees.

I've been waiting how long? I was going to buy the PowerFC, but not until your software came out. Then it didn't. Then I sold my car. I would have helped, as a SW engineer, but I agree with RXCITED, throw it in source forge or somewhere so we can all get to it and contribute properly.

Ears perk up [sarcastic] nope no interest here, none what so ever..... [/sarcastic]

I am not a SW guy but I know friends who are, and I have seen a few great things get shelved that really should not have.

Dont make this one of them.

Either follow through and finish it, or let others pick up where you left off, and live with the knowledge that a seed was planted and is now left to flourish with others.

BTW where have you been surfing? I have been up and down the west coast mostly and HI, let me tell you seadoos make it a lot more fun. Nothing like having plenty of strength to just hit the wave with full energy reserves, rather than be winded paddling and fighting through the surf to get to the lineup.

And if you do decide to pick it back up, may I suggest a Centrafuse plugin, the guys there are very helpful and even leave the door open to monetize your work should you deem that necessary

I'm west coast too. Ireland, that is! :-) There's a few tow-in spots up and down the coast but I just stick to the old fashioned paddle and taking it on the head!

I'm organising the code at the moment (picking up the ball where I left off) to make a start and will certainly consider open source - at least the serial communication layer of the software. I will keep you guys posted asap..

Very interested in this software. I'd be very interested to see the serial communication layer also.
