FC-Datalogit Users Required!

Hi folks.

We need the help of some seasoned FC-Datalogit users to finish fine tuning the latest version of Data Log Lab. Data Log Lab has just been extended to support data logs generated by FC-Datalogit, but whilst all of the generic data within the log loads in without issue, there's a few RX-7 specific bits that we need some more info about.

Do you have some example data logs that you can send through to us? If so, please email them through to support@dataloglab.com - your help is greatly appreciated.

Data Log Lab is a software product that enables rapid and meaningful analysis of the information that is hidden within your FC-datalogit data logs. It offers great functionality and access to it in an elegant and logical way. Its combination of power and ease of use has already won it many satisfied customers - check the web site's Customer Comments page!

One of Data Log Lab's most useful features is the production of Power Graphs for your car from your data logs. Power Graphs are a godsend to home tuners:
- They allow consistent and effective tuning of your car without the need for expensive rolling-road time.
- They give a quantitive and definitive answer to the question "Has my latest performance modification made any difference?".
- They give early warning of failures and problems by allowing the regular monitoring of engine power output.
- The allow instant comparison between cars when the owners live miles apart and don't have access to the same rolling-road.

Data Log Lab's Power Graph feature has been honed over the last 5 years, with the calculations it performs proving astonishingly consistent and typically within 2-5% of rolling road figures.

You can download a free 30-day trial from http://www.dataloglab.com/ now.

Hi folks.

Had some very useful example data logs sent through yesterday - thanks. Though if any one's got any more they'll gratefully received!

Yesterday's logs did immediately highlight a difference between RX-7 data logs and other car types that we've seen so far, and this would have prevented them being loaded by Data Log Lab. The difference is a missing engine type identifier at the start of the log, as seen in this Nissan example:

[SR20DET] <- missing line
Time(S) InjDuty IgnTmng ...
0.000 1.7 24 ...
.150 1.7 24 ...

Not a problem now it's discovered, and as a consequence a new RX-7 specific definition file can be downloaded from the Data Log Lab web site (http://www.dataloglab.com) to overcome the problem. It can be found at the top of the Download page and comes with instructions on how to use it.

We've also added this file to the standard v1.5.6 application download so it's installed with the main application - be sure to correctly select your variation of FC-Datalogit data logs when first running the application.

Yesterday's data logs also showed some columns that we haven't seen in other engine formats. Can anyone provide info on what these columns contain and their minimum and maximum values?

IGL
IGT
VTA1
VTA2
VMOP
FUEL
STR
CLT
STP
CAT
ELD
HWL
FPD
FPR
APR
PAC
CCN
TCN
PRC
IGL
IGT
FuelT
Oil
PC%
InjFS (mS) (as opposed to "InjFp ms")

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

I only know a few for sure without looking up the exact name for the others:
IGL = ignition leading
IGT = ignition Trailing
ELD = Electrical Load
CAT = Catalytic converter (usually comes on when it gets too hot)
FPD = Fuel Pulsation Dampener
FPR = Fuel Pressure Regulator
STR = Starter
VTA 1 & 2 = is the Narrow and Wide sweep of the Throttle Position Sensor (cant remember which is which)
CLT = Clutch
VMOP = voltage reading on the Oil Metering Pump

IGL = ignition leading
IGT = ignition trailing
VTA1 = throttle position sensor voltage (narrow)
VTA2 = throttle position sensor voltage (wide)
ELD = Electrical Load
CAT = Catalytic converter (usually comes on when it gets too hot)
STR = Starter
VMOP = oil pump voltage
CLT = clutch
FPD = fuel pulsation damper
FPR = fuel pressure regulator
PRC = pressure regulator control solenoid (controls fuel pressure on startup to make hot starts easier) I run without it and so do many others that have highly modified cars.
FuelT = fuel temp sensor voltage (0-5v sensor)

InjFS (mS) (as opposed to "InjFp ms")
-InjFP = front primary injector (mS)
-InjFS = front secondary injector (mS)
-InjRP = rear primary injector (mS)
-InjRS = rear secondary injector(mS)

Im not sure about the other few.

the others are probably emmissions/sequential turbo control solenoids...not sure on that though.

While true that these are common acronyms on the forum, these definitions are NOT correct with regards to the PFC

FPD - fuel pump operation
FPR - fuel pump control

You also have the VTA voltages backward. The correct meanings:

VTA1 - Full range throttle sensor
VTA2 - Narrow range throttle sensor

IGL - ignition timing (leading spark plug)
IGT - ignition timing (trailing spark plug)
VTA1 - throttle position sensor full range
VTA2 - throttle position sensor narrow range
VMOP - metering oil pump position sensor
FUEL - fuel temp
STR - starter switch
CLT - clutch switch
STP - stop switch
CAT - catalytic converter thermo switch
ELD - electrical load switch
HWL - exhaust temp warning indicator
FPD - fuel pump operation
FPR - fuel pump control
APR - air pump relay
PAC - port air control
CCN - charge control
TCN - turbo control
PRC - pressure regulator control
IGL - see above
IGT - see above
FuelT - see above
Oil - either oil temp or pressure? not sure on this one.
PC% - I think this is the wastegate duty? not positive again.
InjFS (mS) (as opposed to "InjFp ms")

InjFS is injector, front, secondary. InjFP is injector, front, primary.

The one thing to note about a rotary is that there are two fuel injectors and two spark plugs per rotor (2 rotors stock). So there is front primary and front secondary injectors (front being the rotor closest to the front of the car) as well as rear primary and rear secondary. Leading is the first of the two plugs to fire, trailing is second (again frou plugs total), and the difference in degrees between these two sparks firing is called split.

Hope this helps a bit.

Oil is for oil pressure. The FD does not have an oil temp sensor. PC% is actually for the precontrol solenoid duty (the wastegate is abbreviated WG%). The rest of the acronyms you have listed are correct.

Oil = Metering Oil Pump Position.

Unfortunately FC Datalogit displays the value in a raw format.
To get the % value you must multiply the number with 0.8333 (212.50 / 255.00)

FWIW i have downloaded the program and am riding the learning curve. i will post my comments in a few days...

at the moment there is no IGL or IGT as well as primary and secondary injector output.

Excellent information folks - thank you all.

You can now download a revised RX-7 specific definition file from the Data Log Lab web site (http://www.dataloglab.com) that will load in all of the columns mentioned above. It can be found at the top of the Download page and comes with instructions on how to use it.

We've also added this file to the standard v1.5.6 application download so it's installed with the main application - be sure to correctly select your variation of FC-Datalogit data logs when first running the Data Log Lab.

On a different note, has anyone created an RX-7 Car Definition File for use in Data Log Lab Power Graphs that they'd care to share? These can be created using the Save button in the Car Definition Details window if you've entered the information into Data Log Lab directly.

Alternatively, can anyone supply gearing and tyre info (including diff ratio), vehicle weight, and aerodynamic info i.e. drag coefficient and frontal area?

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

btw, after a bit of struggle, what's new, i did get the Power Graph to work. part of it was making a clean run on my 2 lane country road and the other was a bit of the learning curve.

it appears to generate a first class HP and Torque "dyno" sheet. while i am still a couple of weeks away from an actual dyno the numbers look real close to my expectations.... all w temp and pressure calculations.

i also appreciate the additional definition v the Power FC datalogit scaling of the stripchart...

i would think fasthatch should add a function similar to the power graph as it is a simple time/mass acceleration table... well not that simple

i will be signing up for the DataLogLab when my 30 day deal is up.

Thanks for the info Howard, but are you sure about the frontal area? I know Mazda list my Miata at 22.3ft2 and I would have thought the RX-7 is bigger.

I believe the stock tyre size is 225/50R16 - is that correct?

Also, can you get the Power FC for earlier generation RX-7s, and does FC-Datalogit support them (can't make it out from the FC-Datalogit web site)?

Thanks,

Glenn

Stock tire is 225/50-16, but does your software allow other tire sizes? Most stockers tend to run stock wheels/tires but us very modded usually run larger.

Hi folks

You can now download an RX-7 Car Definition file from the Data Log Lab web site (http://www.dataloglab.com). It can be found on the top of the Download page and comes with instructions on how to use it.

We've also added this file to the standard v1.5.6 application download so it's installed with the main application - be sure to correctly select your variation of FC-Datalogit data logs when first running the Data Log Lab.

All aspects of the Car Definition can be amended once it's loaded into your copy of Data Log Lab, so you can take account of larger wheels, alternative gearing, weight saving measures or even the additon of 500 lbs of ICE!

Thanks in advance,

Glenn

The PowerFC is more or less just for the 3rd generation RX-7 (93-95 US, 92-02 in Japan). AP Engineering in Japan made a special version for the later 2nd generation RX-7s (89-91) but they are quite rare.

According to the Datalogit page, the RX-7 Datalogit works for all RX-7 PowerFCs, including the FC3S (2nd gen RX-7) version.

By far, the majority of the PowerFC users are the '93-95 RX-7s, as that is the only US model.

Isn't the auto tranny a 3.9 rear end, and not a 4.3?

All the Car Definition parameters are editable. For a first gen I'd guess you'll be wanting to change weight and tyres sizes as well.

what does it take for it to show the power? I opened up a log from a recent dyno visit, but it won't show the hp/tq graph.
