Would 3.0 Mazda V6 fit in FD?
Was thinking about this....not that I would commit blasphemy. But if you could build that 3.0 to crank out 250 hp or so and have the added torque, it might be kind of cool, from a scientific/experimental viewpoint....
I KNOW the tranny of my car will bolt right up to that MPV engine.....

How about a 2.5l MX-6 engine? They're wonderfully reliable, and turbo kits are already available to put them in the 250 hp range.
In the 6 they are axially mounted (as Rotary Experiment suggested), but if you're creating a new cradle and mounts for it anyway, I don't think it'd be too much more difficult to mount it transversely.
Not a bad thought... hmm..

MPV is rear or all-wheel drive.

I'm a big Mazda piston fan from before I owned my Rex...The J series 3 liter is well, garbage, its heavy, and its not a very performance oriented motor, and its HUGE. The K series would be fun, but its never been built for RWD and theres alot of considerations with oil flow etc that would come into play. Ultimately if you could live without the torque, the BP <ala miata> is a contender. 300 HP on stock internals is more than doable...400 plus with some mods... The torque isnt great, but it probably isnt any worse than the rotary. The K series suffers from a serious lack of fuel system parts, you'd be looking at one offs for all the rails, injectors etc to really push it, but rumor has it the split aluminum block design it uses is top notch and the thing is nearly unbreakable...I've heard rumors of 700 plus hp being doable
Edit: also, the MPV hasnt been RWD in years, the K series versions sold as of late are FWD or AWD

You rookies. Why would you want to get rid of the rotary for a 3.0 v6. You could just add a 20b motor (if u want to stick with the rotary), or you can just swap in the LS1. The bottom line is, you can get any motor into any car. It just depends on how much fabrication you want to do. I've seen a 454 in a miata. It all depends on how much and how much time your willing to spend.

BMike, you're half right.
yes the Js are crap and the KLs are sweet
but the KL was made in a RWD config. it just happened to get a stroke job and had a suzuki badge thrown on top. it's in the grand vitara.
and a J won't bold up to an FD tranny. it's the same tranny, but different bellhousing.

I guess I shoulda figured there'd be an old school 929 owner around that I'd **** off with that remark. But you affirmed most of my argument against using the J series, especially in an RX7. Weight is a huge factor and I'd bet the J's are probably heavier than the ever popular LS1. RX7 owners go to piston to look for more reliability, not extreme long haul reliability, just a fact of the game. It's a good motor from a drivable, reliable sedan point of view, but its really not a good choice for the application in mind.
Also, the K series in the Grand Vitara, noones ever proven wether or not the thing is close enough to a mazda motor to make work. Randy Stocker <probably one of the authorities on piston powered mazdas> and some others on the miata boards had a big argument. Noone's ever proven or disproven what suzuki changed on the motor <the rumors include the actual block, the cam drive system, etc>. Assuming you could swap the cams to KL ZE units and get everything else up to Mazda spec you could probably have some fun with it, the Suzuki version was definately built for torque rather than revs and HP.

yeah i've helped randy out with his FE3 work althoug he doesn't acknoledge it and doesn't even reply to my mail.
oh well, whatever.
and my reference to the vitara was mainly just for the tranny, i figure it wouldn't be too tough to RWD the engine(even though randy thinks it's impossible)
