Im curious to know what, if anything, any of you have been able to order from Mazda for the older cars. Can we still get mechanical things like trans gears, rear ends, suspension, brakes, etc.?
I don't believe they've discontinued everything.

It depends. The first hurdle is finding a dealer that still has the old parts microfiche for the cars. A lot of dealers tossed their fiche when they switched over to computers- and the new parts CD-ROMs apparently don't cover the old RXs. One dealer that I know still had their microfiche (as of summer, 2001) was Cardinale Mazda in Salinas, California (831-444-7700). One of their parts guys actually has a couple Cosmos and an RX-4, if I remember correctly, so he made sure to hold on to the microfiche.
A helpful parts guy can look in the Mazda system and see what's out there on the shelves. They found me a bunch of stuff I needed for my car at various other dealers around the country- stuff like door locks, some weather stripping, etc. Sometimes you get lucky.

Thanks guys,
I have often found that what you can get all depends on the talent or persistence of the parts guy you are dealing with. One guy might not have a clue, and he'll tell you that the part is obsolete and there are none left. Another guy, however, might find the part in Canada or in some obscure warehouse, and have it shipped for you. (This is my observation from my dealings with 1st gen. MX-6/626 parts, many of which are already unavailable. )

Alot of the parts guys are not even aware that Mazda made the old Rotary cars.
I had a friend who kept some of the old REPU fiche when the local dealer went to CPU's. That info is invaluable now. Even if alot of it cannot be had.

I've found the same thing, try different dealers. I've been pretty lucky out here in California with local dealers. There are a couple guys who actually know what a RX-2 is and they can find parts. I managed to find a new clutch master cylinder for my '71 when I had it, and another local guy I know found a new brake booster for his RX-2. I also managed to locate the window channel rubber pieces for my RX-2 but they wanted too much for them so I passed.
Also many of the older part numbers have changed or just show up as nonexistant so you kind of have to be persistant about them finding the parts. Most guys are too lazy to check 5 different part #s for a single part.

Since University Mazda in Seattle was the first Mazda dealer in the states, they had a parts guy (I think his name was Dick- go figure) that was INVALUABLE when I was hunting parts. The only problem is that was 10 years ago. Most people, including Mazda counter guys, don't know what they are looking at when they see my car, and get the Victrola Dog look after I tell them. I spend ALOT of time explaining it to the unfortunate ones who have not had the rush of winding out one of these little rocket ships.
