Turbo Time for the RX3

It's getting close to running with the turbo installed this time. Got injectors installed, I chose injector dynamics 1000cc for the secondaries. I'll upgrade the primaries when I port the motor. Got all my fittings for the turbo oil feed and drain. Got intercooler supply pipe fabbed. Got most of the exhaust routed yesterday. Exhaust uses 3" 14GA 409SS tubing, 304SS V-bands and RB universal mufflers. Interesting note on the mufflers they are directional, but don't say so. There is a unperforated length on the inlet side of the main muffler and presilencer. I believe this is intended to provide anti reversion and bolster low end torque.

To do today:
* Route exhaust to main muffler.
* Fab 2nd intercooler pipe.

Turbo is a Garrett TA0413 Aircraft turbo. It's a based on a T04E frame, but has a 52 trim Tp38 3.3" diameter compressor in a 0.7 A/R housing. Turbine is P trim Inconel with a 1.3 A/R Stainless open volute turbine housing. Overall it flows close to a 60-1. Turbo was on my bridgeport thus the big A/R.

The motor is a stock Cosmo 13B-RE motor. I figure it should make about 300whp on 10psi. Long term goal is about 400whp.

Bends are mandrel 45, 90, and 180s chopped and welded together. Bends are from columbia mandrel bending.

Didn't get intercooler pipe done, but the exhaust turned out nice.

Thanks guys.

I believe you can get a SS motor flange from Racing Beat.

Looks beautiful! You are gonna love the power too. I have one of those turbos too, it was off a Lycoming TSIO-540. Let me know how it works for you!

That is so cool that you knew it was from a Lycoming. Awesome turbo on my bridgeport. I expect more of the same with this motor. I changed the center housing for a water cooled one after it failed my rear main bearing due to low oil pressure. Factory center housing had too much flow for oil cooling for my old 17mm mazda pump too keep up. I was warned, but I did not appreciate the urgency of the issue.

Settling on this cooler was kinda hard. Purpose build coolers can cost a lot and I didn't want to go that route if I didn't have to. I chose this intercooler mainly because it was the biggest low cost one that would fit without too much cutting. The core is 24"x11"x3" and was intended for a 3rd gen RX. Internal flow area is larger than the compressor discharge area, so it should not choke the motor's top end. It was a little wider than the frame so I had to remove the bumper horns on the frame to get it to fit. I had already removed them though when I had a Volvo 760 intercooler on before. I will need to fab bumper brackets to reinstall the bumper, no biggy.

Another reason I picked this cooler was that the inlet and outlet orientation would force flow to be distributed across the core more evenly than if it fed from the sides. A more ideal setup would have been bottom feed/ top exit, but I couldn't fit that style cooler very easily.

Here's some pics of my turbo manifold. I upgraded my wastegate to a 46mm Tial. I had to increase the size of the wastegate piping on the manifold. I used 1.5" SCH10 304SS pipe. The main runners are 2" SCH40 304SS pipe.

Thanks! The car has a Microtech LT8 with TII coils. Lots to tune. I put a 6 psi spring in the wategate to get me started. Trying to lean towards the side of caution. May be about 2 weeks before I can get back to the car.

I'm really looking forward to hurling down the road in the RX3, but I sure am glad it's got these to slow me down.
