T2 in an Rx3?

What does it take to put a T2 in an Rx3?

I have the parts and I am looking at doing this but what are the things that I need to think of?
I know a guy that did the same thing, but he had to cut out the front frame rail to accommodate the turbo. I woud prefer not to do that. What oil pan do I need? I hear that with a 13B into an Rx2 you have to extend the oil pick up and turn the pan around. What about the Rx3? What other things to I need to think of?

Thanks for your time.

use the GSL-SE oil-pan... with Front cover.

OR a RX-4 oil-pan..... Larger... more oil capacity...

(I have a spare of each if you need one.)

Alot of the turbo RX-3 guys move the turbo forward just behind the pass side head-like area... assuming you have already relocated your battery

If a manifold for this is needed, I have a friend who builds turbo manifolds professionally.
(Neukin.com)

I can ask him if he could fab on using my car as a template...

(I have a couple spare turbos laying around anyway)

WHy do you want to do this swap? I am really happy with my 12A.... adding a turbo to it would be nuts... (hmmm)

Maybe you should start with a fresh healthy ported engine... then go from there.

I have a nice Rx7 autocross car, lots of fun but not a great street car. I have played with ported engines before and they are great, but I wanted to try a turbo. I also have a spare T2 driveline and a spare Rx3 hanging around... it just seemed like a good idea!

You don't have to cut anything on a RX3 it fits perfect. I had a 1973 RX3 with a stock turboII motor in it very fun car as a daily driver. I drove it for 4years when I was in the service, Marine Corps, and then sold it to a friend who drove it around for another 2 years till he blew the motor. Funny thing is motor ran fine but he had switched to a front mount and the front mount had a leak and motor ran lean and ended up cracking an apex seal. Very reliable setup and before I put the complete interior inside the car I ran at the track gutted out and best time I could put down was 12.8 @ 118mph traps. Thats with a limited slip rear and spinning the tires through 3rd gear. When I put the interior in I could only manage 13.01 and I did 13.01x three times in a row. Need the GSLSE front cover and oilpan/oilpan pickup tube or you can get the Moroso aluminum which is deep sumped and holds 6 quarts. You will have to cut the hole for the transmission shifter and fabricate a mount for the transmission. That's easy all you have to do is use the original crossmember for the transmission weld in a piece of flat stock steel on the backside redrill mounting holes and your done. Good luck with the car it will be a very fun and reliable ride when it's done.

I don't believe that the Moroso pan fits the RX-3 chassis...

if anyone can prove other wise, please let me know... I'd like to use one... (on my 12A)

also... when you get your trans ready to go, you can use the RX-3 trans tail shaft housing..onto the TII gear box... if this is a route you;d like to take.. let me know I can give you more info. this way also doesn't require a hole for the shifter to be re-cut further back.

I am actually building a custom trans out of spare parts now..

Using A TII box, 74-78 bell housing and tail shaft housing.. and miata shifter.

Yes the Moroso pan does fit the RX3 chassis. There are two versions of the Moroso pan one is made for full tubular chassis race cars and the other is the front sumped pan and is what I have in my Datsun 1200. Even says in the description from Moroso that it fits RX3's http://www.moroso.com/catalog/catego...?CatCode=11116 Also with the Moroso oil pans you have to use the front mount "early" 1985 and down front covers. It will not work with 1986 and up front covers. And they don't make them for 12A motors you might be able to call them and see if they can custom make one for a 12A. This is the only Moroso pan they make for 12A http://69.20.110.81/index.asp?PageAc...OD&ProdID=8457 and it will not work on a RX3 chassis.
