Rx2 Keys..

Are the door keys different from the ignition key?.
Reason I am asking is cuse I never got a key for my car when I got it. But when looking it over and cleaning the out side of it the next day. I found one of those hide a key things. Just if you lock your keys in your car. Well It works on the doors, but dose not wanna go in the ignition. So I was thinking maybe my ignition might be messed up.

But I found a guy saleing blank keys on eBay. He says they are only for the ignition. So it got me thinking that maybe my key I found was only for the doors and etc..

Here is a link to the key.

Interesting little side note: The door and trunk locks seem to have only been made with relatively few different keyings. I have some old keys that I've been able to use to open a number of pre-RX7 cars. That has come in handy at the junkyard! -WG

They are definetly not a security feature on the early Mazda's. I was able to open the doors of my first RX 2 with a Toyota Camary key!!

Kick,

All that key is, is a blank for the ignition. You still have to have someone cut it.

Can someone cut the key with just the ignition to use as a guide?

Kinda curious about this one?

Yup. I had one made once and watched the guy do it. All he did was insert the key, jiggle it a bit to make a mark on the blank, then take it out and file on it using the rub marks as a guide. He had to do it several times until it worked. Cost me 15 bucks. I guess I was expecting something a bit more high-tech.

My Rx-4 doesn't have any keys. I tried to get someone to cut me a key with the ignition cylinder but they said it can't be done and that they need a door lock cylinder to cut a key with.
I'm pretty upset with this, especially if there are two different keys.

Yeah I know I would have to have someone cut it for me. Are the doors and ignition the same patern or where they both different

I would like to know if they can also pull it from the ignition and be able to make the key. I have seen them pull it from a door lock to make a key for some cars. My dad just had it done about 2 years ago. So I dont see why they couldnt be able to pull it from the ignition. But I really dont know..

Anyone else know if you can or cant?..

not 100% sure, but I think you can mold a key from the ignition. I know that at the local junk yards, there are some booths outside where they make keys and I see guys walking up and getting keys made with only the ignition in their hand.

RX4s use the same key for the doors, trunk AND ignition, although I think there is a different key for the glove box. And a locksmith CAN make a key from the ignition cylinder as per my previous post.

Making keys right at the junkyards? Must be some busy junkyards in So Cal! -WG

Kick,

In answer to your question. Yes the doors and the ignition are different keys, with different patterns.
