Bumpers, side valances, front lip spoilers, etc. Stuff that serves no purpose save for A) show or B) aerodynamic flow control.
Probably called "ground effects" because they change how the car appears in relation to the ground; i.e. side valances make the car look like it sits lower than it actually does.

Just search on rx8club to find out why AT sucks so bad!
I'm 21 I also own an 8, but you can do what I did to lower insurance and that was to buy a 88 GXL and use that as my daily drivers, I saved a lot!
Most advice I can give you is sell the AT And buy an MT

Ever see the video for Offspring's "Pretty Fly for a White Guy"? Especially the scene where the lyrics are:
"Cruising in his Pinto, he sees homies as he pass. But if he looks twice they're gonna KICK HIS LILLY ***!!"
Regardless of race or creed, the message was the same. If you drive down the street in a riced-out car one person in fifty will think "Nice car", two won't give a **** either way, and the remaining fourty-seven will think "There goes another celebate-against-his-will loser in a car that his daddy bought him." Harsh reality, but it doesn't change simply because you wish it to.
These cars already have enough going for them. They don't need extras. True, the automatic means it is slower and will be harder to sell. But under the hood mods (kiss your warranty goodbye) can make up for it without turning the car into even more of a cop magnet than it already is.
Also, if you race it (either on the track or street) and you crash, your insurance will tell you to replace it yourself. Dad will not be pleased.

Dont rice it out! Just do some engine mods so you can maybe surprise some people. Not to much if it is your daily driver, but you cant do very many engine mods besides a cat-back without voiding the warranty.
