Poor Man's Dry Sump System?

Looking for some ideas, suggestions. I have a Lotus 7 style homebuilt that I'm using a '85 12A motor in. With everything setup the way I want it, the clearance between the road and the oil pan is less than I'm comfortable with (approx 3.5"-4" depending on ride height settings). I would like to switch to a home made dry sump system using a 1/2" aluminum plate with oil "drain" grooves cut into to direct the oil to a central pick up point/sump attached to the plate . I'm thinking about a 2stage or 3 stage pump and remote tank connected such that the oil flows the "normal" path through the engine, out to a remote filter, then into the tank, then out to my oil cooler than back in at the front of the engine. I'm just starting to figure this out and have little experience w/ dry sump systems so any comments, suggestions are appreciated.
