Painted My Steering Wheel!

Was tired of that ugly faded gold steering wheel in the Rx-2. Shopped around and found some paint called "Design Master Cherry Wood Tone" Its a translucent wood tone spray paint. They also carry a couple of other wood tone colors. What do you think?

The chrome around the radio had been worn away in places. I used a metallic silver paint pen to fill in the gaps and you cannot tell the difference from the original paint. The chrome on the door panels had peeled away from age and heat. I replaced this with a chrome striping that is intended for the outside of a car. With patience, you can make it work for the door panels. I don't know what kind of durability I can expect though.

I currently have another dashpad at a place called "Dash Restorations" in Washington. They are rebuilding it and replacing the vinyl cover via a vacuum process. Supposed to look like factory when completed. They quoted me $400 to do the job. Looking forward to see how it turns out.

Absolutely beautiful Deuce, I'l bet you're very proud of it. As a side note on wood finishes, most of the interior grade ones do not fair well with outdoor UV exposure. A marine grade polyurethane will give you a longer service life. You might even be able to find a marine grade penetrating oil designed for teak wood. The penetrating oils can also be tinted for color. Either way, you're work is outstanding, keep it up.

Thanks for all of your positive comments! Hoping to to get it down to Sevenstock this year (if there is one). I can't take any credit for how it looks but I was able to find people who really took an interest in the car and gave more than expected.

Is the stock steering wheel in the Rx-2 wood that you refinished? Or did you just paint your stock wheel to look like wood? I want to do this to my first gen steering wheel, but it is covered in black vinyl. I'm not sure if it would look weird or not. I'm also not sure if it would even work trying to paint a vinyl wrapped steering wheel. It seems to me like the paint would come off after a while. Your input on this would be appreciated. Thanks!

That baby is immaculate, a fine example of an Rx-2!

Good job on the wheel.

The stock Rx-2 steering wheel is made of a hard plastic stuff with the wood grain molded into it. I simply spray painted the plastic with a wood tone spray paint. In order to get a wooden type RX-7 wheel I think you might have to get an after market wheel or try to find an old Cosmo with the wooden (good luck) wheel and mount that. My painted wheel needs a clear top coat for durability. Found a bronze color recently that better matches the original color for the Rx-2.

The paint is called "Design Master" www.dmcolor.com The color is "cherry woodtone". They also have a metallic bronze that may closer to the original color. I got my can at Michaels Arts and crafts. Good luck!
