Question New Guy

Hello everyone! I have been reading most of the threads and this place is so cool. So much to learn. Anyways I have an old Ford Cortina(65 MkI) with a street ported 12a. Exhaust is composed of a Racing beat header and straight pipe with a presilencer. Boy its loud. The car was originally my mechanics and the intake setup is from New Zealand with Mikuni carbs. It gets really cold when engine runs. I don't know if this is unique or if its a characteristic of the rotarty engine.
The car is quick it has run low 13's. IMO not bad for a N/A motor. I am looking at my options for more Hp in the future. I want to be able to push around 220-270 hp. I dont know how much I can push a 12A, so my question is what can I do? I can always swap a 13b possibly turbo but I want to try and get the best performance out of this motor before I think about the swap.

The Racing Beat Holley 4BBL setup is supposed to be real good for power if you are just interested in straight line performance.

Or you can spend $4000 on a new engine and supercharger setup from Atkins . . . or trying swapping in a Turbo II motor.

Lots of ways to go, it's mainly about how much money you have to put into it.

Let's see some pictures if you can!

Yeah I have the Holley setup as well. I just didn't like the way it ran with that configuration. I was gonna try it again but I cant find the carb heh. I have carbon apex seals and was thinking of changing em out so that I can run Nitrous or Turbo. How much hp do you think I can get out of a bridgeported 12a or is it a waste of time and should look into a 13b.
I'll get some pics this weekend the car is at my parents house. It's a little hard on the eyes I am getting ready to prep it for paint. Fun little car though i think with motor it tips scales around 15-1600 lbs.

Its a link to a 13b Mk2 Cortina in Australia.

I like the 48ida webers, I had one with... ummm... (I think) 40mm chokes on a fairly big extend port 12a in a 1975 Mazda 1300 Station Wagon... and it used to fly!

THe webers are nice and compact, though the induction noise and lack of a cruise circuit can become annoying.

I now have a 13b bp with 48ida and 42mm chokes in a stripped out 2 door 1300 sedan which has just 2 straight through mufflers on a 2.5" system.... it sounds something like a jet fighter on take-off. And I am still toying with the idea of swapping to a 51ida.

You could do a blow-through turbo conversion on your 12a, or just go a complete 13bt transplant, but you would have to ask just what do you want from the car...

Thanks for the replies. I haven't driven it much in the last year and took her for a spin yesterday. She still flies. Unfortunetly good ole CHP had to pull me over because he thought I was racing my friend. I was just cruising and was able to talk my way out of a speed ticket or speed contest, who knows what he was up to down to a fix it ticket for my exhaust. I guess if Im cruising I should shift before 9k. Heh. So first things first I guess I need to quiet her down a bit and complete the exhaust. Right now its a header strait pipe to a RB pre silencer dumping right before the rear axle. I would have to admit it was loud. Anyone know off hand the db limit in Cali. I think its measured from 50 ft.

What kind of drivetrain do you have? If you consider a 13BT swap (which I recommend) you will need the TII drivetrain as well.

in a country far far away, we have a 96db at 1 metre from the tail pipe, on 45 degree angle at between half and 2/3rds max engine rpm..., or about 90 or 92 db for about an 1986 or 1992 or later car. Kinda sucks, don't it!

I could see that just a presilencer would be loud....

that is not absolutly true. a n/a will work. cant make promises of how much it will hold, but a friend of mine is running high 10's on n/a 2nd gen trany in his rx3. (with a ford rear though) the trany is not the bigest hurdle yet.

What exactly is a blow thru turbo setup. I am only familiar with components to a F.I Turbo setup. Ive seen pics of carb turbo with carb before the turbo inlet is this a blow thru setup? Is this a special type of carb?

that woud be a draw through. it is not the easiest thing to setup a carb for blowthrough/drawthrough.
