well... I was at a friends farm... we went to the junk yard to find parts for his dump truck.....well... we searched all over the yard....walked about 10 miles..... found chevy luvs... datsuns..... everything but rotary..... but all of them were stripped.... or messed up in one way or another..... well... when we finally gave up I started walkin to the gate.... I was about 50-100FT away from the car... I looked at it.. and thought it looked fimilar... I got about 10FT away from it... and saw the perfect front grill... with a perfect R E emblem on it..... I was like SCHIT!!!!!!! ran over it... looked inside....under the hood... saw it was a motor smaller then a 12a.... hood opened up backwards..like my rx-7's.... it had plates one it from like the 70's....and sticker in the window from that time too.... looked like it had been sitting for a LOONG time..... had a trunk rack.. and was an automatic.....

the body was near perfect... aside from paint, one dent that had an "OUCH" bandaid sticker on it..... and the back bumper... it was good....

the motor looked clean.... just like it sat for ever..... and the interior looked nice... I didnt climb in it... but my friend said it was decent.... I didnt see any rips or tears........

I want to go back and get it.... but before I left I asked the guy at the front counter if they sold complete cars.... and he said no.... I asked if he would sell a whole car... and he said no.... since I had to leave so soon....and was in a hurry.... we left.....

If I got it I would restore it.... it looks like ORIGINAL PLATES!!!! and the single sticker in the window looks that way too.....

Questions:
1.) How much should I save up....and offer to the guy?
2.) Why do they say they dont sell cars???
3.) What year is it? I saw it had 4 round tail lights.. and a trunk rack..... if that helps
4.) How rare are the automatics?

well.... if they really DONT sell any cars... I guess I will have to strip it..... and then go back a few days later for the shell I dont want to part it out.... OR modified it.. If I get it... I will restore it.....

Wow, they're popping up all over the place aren't they?

It's sorta unspoken code among wrecking yards to not sell whole cars. I imagine you're going to have a hard time getting it from them. Explain that you're offering more money than they'd ever get from parts, seeing as it's been sitting so long w/out anyone touching it.

I dunno if you read my thread about finding my RX-4 in a junk yard, but I basically had to force their hand by using an engine hoist to extract the car from deep in the yard, and then I put RX-7 wheels with air in them on it, removed the ignition cylinder from the column so it would steer, and rolled it up to their office. They were REALLY PISSED OFF!!!! I got chewed out for a long time, but they did sell it to me.

If it had 4 round taillights it was either a R100 or a RX-2. The RE on the grill makes me think RX-2. If it had one headlight per side its an R100, 2 per side means RX-2.

Automatics are pretty rare (i have one myself) but luggage racks are even more rare. Ultra rare is the "MAZDA" belt line decal and the "Factory MAG" wheels which look like the old Hot Wheels car wheels.

well... it had a different back bumper then the one on your site..... well.. here this one....



It was more like an old VW bug bumper... similar to this, but it was all bent to **** from people pulling on it with a rope or chain....




Oh.... and it had some kind of compressor... or somthin.... like power steering or A/C.....

What do mag wheels look like?????

WELL.... I guess I put up the wrong word in the tittle... "opinions"... oops.. sorry about that..... oh.. and where the hell would I find a rebuild kit for a 10a???

I believe that you can still get the parts for the 10A from Mazda. A lot of the old engine parts can be swapped from an old 12A.

oh... and I just looked at a brochure.... and it gave the options.... and it looks to have alot of them... it might have all of them... will see.... I am gonna save 250-300 and go offer it to them..... so hopfully they will take it......

You couldn't find any "Mazda RX-2" badges? Please tell me you didn't find a R100 sitting in a yard. That would be insane.

I tried buying a complete car before from one of those places but they wouldn't go for it. I'd talk to one of the guys driving the forklifts. If it's easy to access (on an end row, etc.) they might move it for you.

no... as I walked away.. it said RX-2 on the side.... perfect chrome.. everything.... all emblems.... I just didnt notice.. was too overwhelmed and in a hurry...

oh.. yeah its on an end row.... and there was a few people DRIVING THROUGH the yard pickin parts off of various cars... which I was scared they are gonna hit the car.....

oh... and no... i dont think they where mags.... i think they were 4 spoke... with a circle over the spokes..... but they were badly rusted.. and I thought the rims where mismatch.. thats just the kind I remeber.... I wish it wasnt like 4 and a half HRS away doin 70MPH non-stop.. cause I would go look at it closly.....

well... I dont know what it has... is it a 10a, or a 12a???? just curious..

rx2's with round tail lights came with twin dizzy 12a's - they just look small.
The auto models have larger trans tunnels than the manual or piston counterparts (which is all good!). Dunno about a "compressor" on the engine as I am certain they didn't have AC or power steering standard - and never seen them as an option! (coould be part of a wacko emissions control!). Check the chassis no on the firewall, should say something like "S122a" - for an rx2.
Check under the battery and in the front rails, under the carpets and in the corner under the rear window for rust.
At a guess, the engine is rooted and the trans is cactus too.... if the chassis is any good just fit up a 13bT & matching 5sp... just move the turbo up and forward a touch.

About the unspoken code of the wrecking yard It's not really rue my father owns one and thye will sell anything for the right price the only 2 reasons they wouldn't sell it would be:

1 they don't have a title (not sureabout where you are put this is a major pain for a yard to get a title for a car with out one Those get strip and go to the crusher usually)

2 They are keeping it for parts for the owners car.

I live in New Jersey. I located a 1977 Rx3 in a Minnesota junkyard. I called the junkyard up and asked if they would sell the whole car, they said it had no title would I be intrested without a title? I said yes. I asked the yard owner if the car was really rusted up? he said yes. I asked him if he was sure it was a Mazda Rx3? he said well it says "Rx3 Sp" in the quater panel. Well 1 day and 1/2 later I was in Alexandria Minnesota picking up my Rx3 Sp. I have turned it into a full drag racing proyect but still keeping the Rx3 look. Im not done yet with the proyect but I am happy I have restored this Rx3 Sp that would other wise go to the metal muncher..
