Cutting slots for the cross shaft brg. holders

Getting cross shaft bearing holders and everything ready for the belt drive and final chain drive ,. Next the rear wheel and rear frame and the rest should come together fairly quick as most of the electrical has already been used on the little engine. Need a nice compact 3 core rad. some coolant hoses , oil cooler . I think most of the harder things are done just on to all the little things that get put off till the end. :icon16:...http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...fE7-t4Nc#t=18s

New Harley centerline wheels

1 Attachment(s)
Got these off kijiji for 100 each they are new changed over to after market stuff at the Harley dealership . Some guys don't like solid center lines but they will do the job great for me one for racing and one for the burnout box . OHHH YEAA now I can get on with the rear drive part. :) Gerald m

I have read this post about three times, I am also building a sand dragster with 13B in it.

jaggermouth 05-10-12 12:04 PM

Sorry for a semi off topic question, but you guys seem to know what's up with 13b in bikes!
The "famous" rotorcycle uses a BMW r1100gs trans and rear drive. Other than an adapter, what do you think he used for a flywheel and clutch?

Michael Feel free to put up a few pics or a vid or two I don't mind at all maybe you will attract chainreactions attention .. He has been racing a self built sand car for some time now . He turned it over to his son last year now he just tunes and watches .
He has been a big help with info on my cvt drive . He also runs I think a 100 hp nitro kit . I guess if you have been over my thread you know pretty much the same as I do about his rig . he is a member of this forum but I haven;t seen him around for a while now .. Welcome thanks for the interest Gerald m :)

Michael Murray 05-10-12 12:35 PM

I know him from a sand drag forum and i bought my VW/Rotary adapter from him. How loud is your bike with the short header pipes on it?

For the time being all I can tell you about the machine is of course it comes from I think Australia .( Where else ) guys put everything in the rotary bikes . I know one dude runs a chevy powerglide of all things and he is running 168 mph in the 1/4 mile something like 600 hp self built . others use different types of drag clutches a couple use the cvt drive , I should know something in a day or two :) Gerald m.

jaggermouth 05-10-12 05:39 PM

Ok reason I asked was it intrigued me. Other pics shows a cable clutch I think. I wonder if I told a machine shop my plans if they could make the BMW flywheel work with a 13b

gerald m 05-10-12 08:17 PM

I don't see why not . These days shops can do most anything if one has a deep enough pocket . I really haven't thought about using a cable clutch . I think if I was going to use a clutch I would be thinking about some kind of hydraulic system . I think if one wanted to be in the circle you would need to go to something shiftless .
Because of the torque of the modified machines that I have looked at most engines are cross mounted and then some type of staging clutch .
With the times bike are running now there really isn't time for the shifting process unless you are using a some type of a air or electric shifter and I'm not even sure if they are legal for racing .
don't know what kind of power you are dealing with but if you are going to run a rotary you will need to cross mount or the bike will drift to the right at a rapid pace .
The first bike I built was inline with a auto trans and it was impossible to control . I would suggest if you are doing a build with a rotary to cross mount and use some kind of auto drive . A friend of mine at Outlawdragbike .com nickname jaffa under the section ALTERNATIVE BIKE BUILDS is running 600 hp with a cool setup that drives a powerglide trans ( with a bit of work they are almost bullet proof ) from the front of the engine . check it out . .Very strange thing , I have been watching this guy for a long time and after I joined the Outlaw dragbike forum he joined shortly after and informed me he had been watching my build from the start . Small world . In my opinion forget the clutch and go alternative drives . :)

jaggermouth 05-10-12 09:00 PM

Basically the look Im going for is a lengthwise rotary...I wonder if my transmission solution would be solved if I went cross wise though...
Im not shooting for an insane hp number. My goal is to have a short distance rotary bike that will make the odd trip down the strip.

EDIT:
I jsut looked at that build on outlaw...holy man, thats sweet. Looks like a crafty mind went into that pulley/belt drive to the powerglide tho

gerald m 05-10-12 09:15 PM

well you do what you want but if you go inline it will be pleasing to the eye but almost nonfunctional . be happy to help where I can :icon16:

jaggermouth 05-10-12 09:26 PM

hmm, i wonder if a beetle trans would do the trick if one axle flange was blocked off as they have rotary adapters...
Anyways, Ill stop clogging your thread!

gerald m 05-10-12 10:10 PM

That's ok I really don't mind pop in anytime .. If you use that tranny the guy you are racing will be in the return lane before you get that fucker shifted into second gear :)
They are from what I hear a very tough tranny but not what you need I'm thinking . Not trying to be negative on you but I already been there and the girls are ugly and the wine sour .:icon16: Think SMOOTH CONTINUOUS MOTION and crank her on

jaggermouth 05-10-12 10:16 PM

Thanks, Ill trust ya haha.
If I could get the bmw trans to work, I'd be golden. Thats the only real thing Im concerned with. The other stuff is fun and about what Im used to. Transmission conversions aren't my thing because Ive never done it...

gerald m 05-10-12 10:44 PM

If you have mucked about with shit before you will be ok just take your time and think things out before you start , check out some of the forums that have alternative bike builds .. The aussies and guys from new zealand areas are top notch for building odd off the wall shit , There are probably more rotary motorcycles from them two places than the rest of the world put together .
Buy the way as far as I can tell the bike you posted is from australia I think he is on the dragbike .com forum . not sure .
If you are referring to the cable that runs to the rear of the tranny in the pic it looks more like a shifter than anything .?? :)
Yea Jaffa ( Steve ) is a very sharp dude and a very nice guy we have had some super chats .. join us there actually Ian King the builder of the gulf bike ( Puma Engineering ) is a member there he keeps pretty much to himself though . Check that one out , he was going 200 miles per in the 1/4 mile when everyone else was at 160 . He was running from 1000 to 1500 hp depending on what the track and day was like he tuned it in accordingly ..He still races but mainly builds big twins for the big boys. Enough said have a good one and like I said pop in anytime .. :) Gerald m

rotary stuff

Hey guys, sorry I have been amoungst the missing lately.
We had our 1st race of the year a couple of weeks ago, I literally pulled the car out of the trailer, fueled it up and made our 1st pass. Ran 4.6's and 4.7's all day (within .05 second of our best pass ever) dropped the fuel pressure slightly to work on a starting line stumble.
This past Sunday we had our 2nd race of the year, Jordan pulled it into staging and touched it off. The car launched the hardest it ever has, took off like a rocket and at 3/4 track.... pbbbbtttt! The 150hp shot of nitrous caused 2 of the NGK plugs porcelain inners to shatter, ingesting the pieces and ripping the apex seals off both rotors! The motor is out and on the bench, now I'll have to decide weather to rebuild the stock 12a (which I have run for 7 years now), the bridge-ported 12a or the peripheral port 12a! decisions, decisions.... leaning towards the b-port as i would retain the fuel and exhaust system now in place.

Hey Darryl welcome back yea it.s been a while . Sorry to hear about the little engine . I need to ask the obvious which is ,, since you just took it out of the trailer do you think that the plugs had to many runs on them or is it just a poo happens deal with a set of new .
Exhaust system ?? OHHH you mean that 2 pieces of pipes sticking out the back . just kidding man. Are the shinny guys still complaining about the the ( throaty ) exhaust ?? How did big balls in the other lane do against Jordan and the little car .. ? Sorry for all the questions just curious .
If you tear the little dude down maybe put up some pics of the internals . Thanks for the update :icon_tup: Gerald m.

bumpstart 05-22-12 08:44 PM

sounds like when you adjusted fuel pressure down on the last race you didnt have the margin in your wet nos system to keep the fuel up

Re: Dragons' Breath Cross Mount rear wheel and frame build

Well gaining a little , new front moto tire 100-100-x 18 should help keep things going straight .. New rear tire on special order 5 inch by 18 so when it is mounted on the 5.5 inch rim the face of the tire should appear flat which should give the most traction not much good for turning but that is just fine ..

need to get the rear axel made and threaded . then the rest of the stuff should fall into place as most of it is off the old dragon . going to use a old larger than normal fire extinguisher for my fuel cell .. The end of June is looking reasonable for the dragon to be fired up and tried .

Recreation Supply in Saskatoon Saskatchewan are very interested in the dragon and want to see it when finished . They may supply tires and drive belts for the bike which would be a good thing for my wallet . even if they gave me their products at cost would be great . Just a few more brackets in the right place should finish the back end .. :icon16: Have a good one Gerald m.

looking good mate , top stuff as usual

Rear section of frame completed

Hey Bumpstart haven't seen you around much .. Finally got rear frame finished . Rec Supply phoned me this morning to let me know rear tire is in 143.00 . Anyone got any ideas on where to mount battery .? - I need most of the room in the jack shaft area to build exhaust , Darn square batteries take up a lot of room . Ever since I started this project was thinking of a spot for it . If the weight is a bit heavy on the clutch side the battery would work as good ballast on the right BUT THEY ARE SO STINKING BIG . Any Ideas feel free to talk it up . Have a good one Gerald m. :icon16:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNC4O...1&feature=plcp

Threading Dragon' rear axle 1 inch x 14 threads per inch

Making threads with a simple engine lathe , 1inch shaft with NF threads ,, Standard 14 threads per inch and a little secret at the end showing how to make a extra close nice fitting thread .:) hope you enjoy . Gerald m.

Dragons' Breath gets a seat video #24

Finally starting to look like a bike . seat is mounted , need key way in jack shaft , get chain on , exhaust will be soon , found a nice fatty fire extinguisher for a fuel tank but it only holds about 1 3/4 gallons It would need filling every couple runs maybe only one . Haven't figured out how much the dragon will weigh but I doubt it will hit 500 pounds . there is a weight scale just four blocks away so that will tell . My son was with me the other day and I wanted to see how balanced it was so we removed the blocks I straddled the bike . I got it all ready where it seemed to balance and let go of the handle bars it just stayed there so I told my son to let go now , he told me I did dad ,I look and the crazy dam thing was sitting there by it;s self . 100 mm wide front knobby and 120 mm wide rear knobby both 18 inch and it just sits by it;s self . Next time I take it off the blocks I will get a few pics of it . The center of gravity is very low a kid could balance it with no problem. Have a good one . Gerald m. :icon16:

gerald m 07-05-12 12:18 AM

The oil cooler is from a 98 GMS Sierra 6.5 diesel the Rad from a courier truck the coils of course are stock Mazda .The ignition is almost done now just fuel and exhaust , I see a drop of coolant from the water pump so I will change it out before I go any further. .
