Update:
Well we had some damn fun this weekend. Drove the car for the first time with the rotary. No doors, no seatbelts, no fenders, no hood, no trunk lid, no windows, no sunroof. Just motor, wheels, seats, and co-pilot
OH and IN THE RAIN. There was no stopping us.

Now after seeing that I would like your input. I had no gauges hooked up and no tach. I've never driven a rotary before and I think I shifted pretty early (or I could have taken it further). Of course I will know when I hook up the tach, but would you say that was roughly 5k rpm? Thats what I'm guessing.

I installed the Carter pump and the motor runs better, also I don't have to worry about the carb flooding. It is loud though, maybe even a little louder than the Facet pump. But you sure as hell can't hear it over that exhaust!

yeah fair amount of metal work . would have been easier of i had any experience mig welding but trial by fire (literally) taught me alot.

Thanks man! I will definitely keep posting progress. Right now I'm knee deep in bodywork and I figured I wouldn't bore everyone with that. After running the car in that video I have only started it about two times. I finished making the bezel for my gauges last night and I just have to powder coat it. So soon I'll have the gauges hooked up and I can start to button things up.

The adapter plate is from kennedy adapters. http://www.kennedyeng.com/mazda.htm
It comes with a machined flywheel to make the vw trans and clutch line up with the mazda rotary. They make many other adapters for other applications as well.

Wow- wicked car and what a great thread! Congrats on getting it running.
I think the videos make this thread- they give it the passion that is 'getting hooked on rotas'! In your vid of the first start it was exactly like miine when I first started my rotary chevette- the whoop of joy when it started....
My one suggestion for you is that you ditch the OMP system and just simply run premix. Do some searching on the topic. (its a debate issue with some)
Basically using OMP you are burning dirty sump oil and you have to keep check on oil levels. So no less hassle then squirting in 100mls of decent 2 stroke oil with every 10 litres of gas. (sorry for being metric- but ****- you own a german car....)
With premix you will always be protected! and 2 stroke is designed to burn and burn clean- unlike mineral oil. Plus its less stuff in the engine bay- to go wrong...
I'm watching this car thread for sure- you have inspired me to get cracking on my rotary Viva!

First of all thanks for the comments guys, sometimes the motivation helps you get through the rough spots of the project.
wmelon: I had read alot of people use the 6v starter with the 12v system to get extra starting power and the kennedyadapters site suggests it as well. So I bought a 6v starter and went to install it. Turns out the 6v has a different shaft diameter and also has a different amount of teeth on the flywheel gear, so it won't mesh with the 12v flywheel. THIS IS WHY I MUST RESEARCH IT BEFORE I BUY IT! That seems to be my problem I buy **** without fully researching it and then it doesn't work That being said I threw the 12v starter back in and it doesn't seem to have a problem turning the motor.
yoeddynz: This past winter I rebuilt the omp lines with that clear pfa tubing stuff and they came out great. But when everything was hooked up and I got the motor running I could see that oil was not pushing up from the omp in the lines. I had the vacuum lines hooked up and all so I don't know why this way happening. The oil would rise about 2" in the lines and no more. So I did research removing the omp and just premixing and that is what I will do.
So does anyone want to buy some freshly rebuilt omp lines?

yeah- putting a rotor motor into something that didn't have one and hearing the first new lease of life for that car is a buzz! And the first drive- awesome. I like the way you and your mate are giggling like kids on the test drive!

What about the different flywheel gear situation? Is it possible to machine the 12v gear to fit on the 6v starter? I have searched this problem on the samba and found mixed results.

On my bug I am running the standard 12v starter and I hope it starts the rotary as well. If you are worries about the 12v not spinning fast as the 6 volt. It is posssible to have the 12v starter rewound to a 6v internally. That will be my route if the 12v doesn't start my roto bug. :p Plus, I already have the 12v, why buy another starter and watch the 12v sit there in the garage hahaha. just my 2 cents. hope that helps ya
