Mine is sideways more than 90% of the time haha. (I drift competitively) I push mine to the limit (or past) and love to break things just to find out how far I can push them. With that being said, only the glass, doors, and some body parts are stock on my car. Everything else I have changed or modified.
You just got your car, and you have no clue what you have. So basically I KNOW we use our cars differently.
But also, if I had an FD, it would be hard for me to want to drift it, so whatevers.

I have not had the chance to work on any third gens. (I tried to work in jenkins but he wasn't going to have it haha) 3rd gens arnt anything special. The engines are the same (minus emissions and the twins) but again its still VERY basic and simple. You can work on it yourself unless you just dont have the tools / time. Everything you can do to your car has been done before by someone else that has already documented the whole procedure. Do your research, and you can fix anything at 1/100th the price than a mazda stealership.
Whats wrong w/ ur 3rd gen? What are you going to do with it? just DD and beat up on hondas on the freeway?

ok. heres the deal. my carb keeps freezing in this damn cold weather because it is missing the warm air intake that sucks air in from around the exaust manifold. this is the peice that hooks into the bottom of the air intake on the snorkel on the 84 gsl. do you know where i could get one of these? because the previos owner removed it when he put in the custom exhaust.

eeekk, thats new to me, I dont all the special things on a first gen, I don't think I have even looked into a first gens engine bay for longer then 30 seconds while jenkins explained some things on his dd first gen. If you need the part, throw up a WTB (willing/wanting to buy) thread on the first gen parts section on the forum. You will for sure get a response.

So I'm throwing myself in the market for a new rx7. I'm still going to fix my dad's but I really want something of my own.
I would really like to get a turbo, but my budget is limited to around $3000, maybe a little more if I really have to.
I don't mind if it's completely stock, I want something I can work on and fix up.
I was looking at a nice 88 turbo vert on autotrader, but it was sold
So if anything pops up or if you have any suggestions please let me know

Wow it's been quiet here. I think I'll try starting a conversation.
So I've been reading up on adding nitrous oxide to rotary engines and I've come across some ideas that I'm unfamiliar with, and in my never ending quest to gain more knowledge, I've tried to find information on them but have come up empty-handed.
With a wet nitrous system I've learned that it's a good idea to do an intake manifold porting and a TB port. Where I get stuck is what exactly they involve. I've become rather familiar with the rest of the nitrous system, but i can't figure out for the life of me the advantage to doing these things.
Any help?

My honest opinion is nitrous is a complete and utter waste, (especially for a daily driver). Why would you pay I donno lets say 20$ for 4 or maybe 5 runs if you have a bottle heater, to get the extra 50 or 100 shot. It would be MUCH easier to just run turbo, at 5 psi, and have the power ALL the time. You won't have to worry about hitting the nitrous to early (LOW rpm nitrous hits are BAD again because of fear of blow back and it's hard on the engine), filling the bottle, or getting the wet system tuned. That is the reason nitrous is a waste to me. The ONLY reason I can see it is for a hard core drag racer NA, or to combat some HUGE turbo lag on a HUGE turbo.
Drive a turbo 13b, running either a stock turbo @ 10 psi (240ish rwhp), hybrid (stage 1 300 rwhp - stage 4 400rwhp), or a complete single turbo system, and TRUST ME, it will be a lot more power than you will EVER need. Have you felt what it feels like to have 300 rwhp in a 2,700 lb car?
here is an example of hitting nitrous at too low of an RPM, not something I would EVER want to risk in my car that's for sure.

I hope I answered your question. Feel free to just call me and ask me on questions like these in the future if you want to.

Yeah, that pretty much answered my questions. lol.
And thanks for the info. I do like power, though i'm still unfamiliar with it in an rx7
What I end up doing is probably going to largely depend on what car I end up getting. And what car I end up getting is going to be dependent on what's available at the time I need one, which is going to be around the time of this summer. I sadly am not going to have the luxury of taking my time shopping for a car, and I definitely want an fc.
btw, what kind of wrhp are you putting down in your car? You still need to take me for a ride in it so i know the experience :P

haha well... it's a long story, but I blew my turbo engine because of a injector failure. I should be up and ticking with the turbo car, hopefully a few weeks after the spring break. That week is going to be the worst spring break ever, ordering parts, rebuilding, installing, and tuning haha. But when I get it running, I will definitely let you know. It should be tuned before the last day of school for sure.
Cash money - your still in pullman?? I have yet to see a 3rd gen around here.... I would have strait up stalked you to your house if I would have seen you the last 3 years...

so the carb freezing thing i had going on...i figured it out. ithe warm air intake located on the bottom of my intake was missing its hose. lol. i don't know why i didn't see it sooner.lol.
v8 conversions. i looked in the archive and didn't see it pop up. would it be way in the back or do they only do it in second gens?

So my dad has officially decided that he doesn't want to deal with our rx-7 anymore. So, he has given it to me. Well, actually, he gave it to me for $3, but whatever.
So now it is on me to fix it. Still planning on taking the engine out and taking it apart over break, then probably ordering the appropriate parts to put it back together over summer. Is there any damage to be done to an engine by leaving it apart for that period of time (2 months-ish)? Or is there some other option I should consider for an engine?

Well, I think we should sit down and talk about your ideas and plans for the car face to face. You really do have tons of options, and it is kinda hard to explain everything over text.
Here are pretty much your basic options after you take apart your engine:
1. After you take it apart you find that 1 rotor and rotor housing is completely trashed from an apex seal going out.
..... A. Find replacement rotor and rotor housing and do a rebuild.
.......... AA. Doing an NA-Turbo is still an option.
..... B. Ditch the NA and find a J-spec engine from japan to install.
.......... BA. Take apart the J-spec and rebuild it so you have a very reliable turbo engine.
.......... BB. Get extremely lucky and have a perfectly fine J-spec engine that wont require a rebuild and will last you a while.
..... C. Find a crashed running t2 7 for $1000 and swap EVERYTHING out of it. This I did because it pretty much upgrades your whole drive train and I was tired of blowing sissy NA transmissions.
2. After taking it apart you find that ALL the apex, side seal, and corner seals are done (common)
..... A. You can do a minimal rebuild for QUITE cheap, and get you back on the road NA style.
.......... AA. You can still NA-T if you wish, but wouldn't recommend it.
........B. Then same from above ^^^^^
There are still tons of options, but those are the basics. Each option sounds A LOT easier to say than do by the way. I really would like to sit down with you and draw out a plan for it. Also since I have been there and done that to all of the possible plans above, I can tell you the cost of each, how much time it will take, and the performance possible.
Hope that helps.

Oh opps, and no, there is NO problem letting a dead engine sit for months/years as long as it isn't like outside getting water rained on it, into the intake and such. You will have to replace ALL soft seals on the first rebuild anyways no matter what. (unless you want to reuse oil, but ... whatevers) leaving it apart, I dont see how any damage could come from that. If you clean the rotors with like a wire brush or something and scrape off all the protecting layer the rotor will start to rust a little, but not the end of the world.
Get it apart this week, and we will work from there. Take pictures and notes.
Laters.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I agree with the idea of a face-to-face meeting, twill be much better than sitting on a forum typing back and forth, that i know for sure. Just let me know what works best for you and we'll put something together.
It's nice to know I have options with all this. I obviously have my ideas of what i'd like to do, but most of that centers around getting it running again, lol. So apart it will come this week. I'll be sure to document well, probably clean all parts, then put them in a safe place for storage. I'm not going to worry about getting any kind of rebuild kit or seals kit until I know fully what I'm dealing with.
I'm so happy to finally have my own car, even if it's not currently running

Congrats on your first car bud! It's a great feeling.
Beleive it or not, but you have a better start on your car than most people. Most people buy a blown rx7 from someone, but doesn't know anything else about the car. (example, clutch wear, how good the transmission is, electrical issues) But since you have been driving the car before it blew, you pretty much know all its quirks or issues. (if any!) I know you and your dad kept the car in great shape.
I will/you can call me after spring break, after we know what shape the engine is in, and set up a time to meet. I have been in your position (blown engine) ...ooohh... 6 or 7 times now, so don't worry. It can only get better.
