stock turbo wait time?
I was thinking about this one for a while and I even had a co-worker ask me this one, I didn't know the answer so I wonder if anyone else does.
I know that custom turbos need a turbo timers so that the turbo blades may have time to cool down in idle mode before you take the key out and shut the whole thing out, but wait what about stock turbo's?
Does it hurt the stock turbo's to turn the car off quickly.

One of the big reasons for the turbo timer, is for the ball bearing turbos that will continue to spin at high speeds for long periods of time. Also its good to let the car idle for a while because the center section is very hot and it should continue to have oil and water pumped through it to cool it. Its not too much the blades cooling. If the car is just shut off the oil that sits in the center will boil and result in "coking" of the center section which starts to clog it up and restricts oil flow. Any car may benefit from turbo timers, but especially those that have expensive single turbos with BB sections, and even more especially the turbos that arent water cooled.

its not the blades that need to cool, as they are pretty light and shed heat fast, its the turbo body that needs to cool so that the residual oil in the body doesn't get hot and coke up (cook the oil to a brown fudge like substance). stock or no, the turbo needs to cool to some degree before being shut off. The turbo timer is insurance that this will happen. In most cases, on the street, there isn't that much residual heat in the turbo body by the time you putter up your street and mosey into the garage.... so a timer could be overkill.
It is always bad for a turbo to be ridden hard and then shut down without cooling, but in most cases (on the street) the turbo is essentialy cool by the time you are in a parking space...

No need to "turbo-time" your car with the stock turbo's oil and water-cooled turbo.
I still drive easy for a minute or so before shutting it off after hard driving.
