RPNW.ORG Kart racing day at Sykart in SW Portland (Saturday, Feb 10, 2007)

Rotary Power Northwest RX-7 Club (RPNW.ORG) is having an event at Sykart, in SW Portland on Saturday, February 10th, at Noon for indoor Karting action. You do not need to be an RPNW member to participate and no special training is required. First timers will have to watch a safety video, sign all their rights away and pay an additional $2 for a reusable cotton helmet liner, to keep the loaner helmets clean. Each 10 minute race is about $15, if I recall correctly. We usually run two or three races, but you can do as many or as few as you like.

The address is: 8205 SW Hunziker Rd, Portland, OR 97223. (503-684-5060)

Directions:

From I-5, take exit 294 and merge onto Hwy 99W.
From SR-217, turn onto 99W heading south.
From Hwy 99W, turn South on Hall Blvd., turn left on Hunziker Rd, Drive east for approx imately 2 blocks. Sykart is on the Left.

Hope to see you there.

You can use your own as long as it's full faced. Other than that it could be a 20 year old unit and you could still use it. They provide a helmet if you don't have one.

The event is this Saturday! Who is planning to attend? I will be there and will probably drag along at least one friend. Matt Mckinney from the club said he will be there. I assume Adam (Moto) will be there, as he is the defending champion and loves to beat up karting hacks, like myself. Jarred is sick, but hopefully he feels better in time to participate. Bill White has family plans. John (Apex), will you grace us with your presence or wimp out like last time? Spyder? Anyone else?

If you are coming, give a shoutout.

They are planning another move at work, but it looks like Saturday is wide open. I should be able to make it.

Where's Randal?

Nuts, they changed the schedule at work. We are working tomorrow. Sorry I won't be there. Have fun!

Well, that was fun! The rest of you missed out. We ran two heats, which was plenty for me. A couple of the guys stayed for more. There were only six of us running plus another member who just hung out and took photos. Some of the usual suspects were MIA unfortunately so the turnout was on the small side. But it gave the rest of us a nice wide-open track.

I didn't really keep track of the results, though I was (I think) 3rd in both heats and set the fastest lap-time in the second heat -- I might have done better if someone had not run me right into the barrier and cost me 13 seconds from getting stuck. D'oh! But I probably would not have won anyway because my lap times were not consistently good. I only do this about once a year and it takes me until about halfway through the second heat to even feel like I am approaching competence.

Here are a few photos that Jarred was kind enough to take with my camera. He should have a bunch more to share from his camera.

Adam (moto) took first in the first heat, but he had a 4hp advantage, running the faster kart. They use nicknames, so I don't recall who was the top dog in first heat among the low-hp karts, but I think it was "JD" or something like that. The same guy came out on top in the 2nd heat, with Adam next.
