Official Touge Road Thread
ok gang.... after all my ranting.... lets get a thread together of recommendations of your favorite "touge" mountain pass style roads to drive.... Keep in mind, we are looking for tight, winding roads, 2nd and 3 gear tops, lotsa turns, lots hairpins, fairly low speed- but only cause you got very little room for acceleration...... Where im from these roads usually end in the word "canyon" hehe....
Some suggestions so far have been:
Mercer island: E Mercer way
chuckanut drive.. any comments ?
Spiral HIghway.. any comments?
The unnamed road to the tip of Mt. Erie..........
Pessinger Road near Yelm
Keep em coming.................................

im from the northern parts of western washington so ill comment on a few. also note that when i talk about these runs i talk about them from a grip drivers point of view. if i drifted i would talk about that too but unfortunately i only practice grip.
chuckanut-
from burlington to bellingham: 1st half nothing but strights, good for testing ur 0-watever speed, boring for the most part and smells like mauer. sendond half: I LOVE IT! slight up hill and thight turns. the first turn is really like a hairpin that ends with a short hill climb then tapers off in to consequtive turns around the cliffside. there are some straights for for guys with big turbos u better hope ur turbo spools like a bat out of hell cuz the straights are really short and end in sharp low speed twisties. 75% through the run you'll find a steeper hill climb with higher speed turns and strights that are up and down.
From bellingham to burlington: entering the chuckanut run from bellingham is the samething but in reverse and slightly downhill. u NA guys will love the down hill a lot cause you wont be relying on power as much and the strights seem to be even shorter. be expecting to be breaking even harder and using more throttle play instead of fire and ice acceleration. moreover dont be surprised if u notice ur skills and throttle control change for the better in just 2 or 3 runs. this is also a great place to practice ur heel toe as to engine breaking will be the most efficient way to slow down suddenly to negotiate entry speeds.
Alger - bow eddison rd
just outside of burlington and ends in bellingham.
a lot of up hill high speed twisties, blind corners, high speed corners that transistion into low speed downhill corners. expect a lot of ups and downs and blind corners. high speed corners for this road are negotiable at speeds up to 60 to 70 mph, however from 65-70 ur tires run the risk of sliding out from under you do to some loose gravel ( and no this road isnt a dirt road and no it doesnt have pot holes it just an out of the way road that not a lot of people traffic so it doesnt have a lot of new asphalt). this road likes to teach its drivers proper accel control- accel to hard and ur tires slip do to the loose gravel, accel to lightly and u'll find ur selves crawling up some of the hills so u'll just have to increase the levels of how much u play with the throttle. run last longer than chuckanut.
mosquito lake rd-
just off of the mt baker highway. same as bow eddison rd but with more twisties, more blind corners but with more inclines and declines. in my opinion, this is the most challenging road of the three i mentioned here. but there is a reason why i listed them in this order. each run helps u prepare for the next.
now if ur done honing ur skills on those roads then head up to mt baker and do the uphill and downhill and put what u've learned to the test! also note that doing these runs consequtively can run an entire tank of gas dry. trust me ive tried ^_^ well thats all from me best of luck to you all!

Brian.... nice, lots of good, intelligent info there. thank you, that is just what i was looking for.....( not a "i like to drift here" response...haha)
Im really excited to start exploring these areas, they sound fun and challenging..... perhaps we should set a date for west side cruise to these roads..... Growing up in SoCal was a playground of these types of roads, so im glad to hear i can get my fill in the great NW....
Anyone else!?

the Mt erie road is soo bad ***...short, and not a very well maintained road, and has to be drivel at night due to traffic, but i love it.
I wasn't anything impressed with chuckanut. there was only the one hairpin by the restaraunt, but i havent driven it in my 7, only in my girlfriends focus, so mabey that would make a difference!
my 2 cents

Weve got a fun litttle shorty run over here on the backside of the plateu in Bonney Lake, nothing special, but it is tight succesive cornering, all 2nd gear power.... Petty much the down hill and uphill on Rhodes Lake Rd.... 98390.. i like to hit the downhill first to jog my memory, then blast it uphill as hard as i can push it....
hope these links work...

afgmoto's on the right path but has 4got a fun few. McNamee and i believe its thompson. McNamee is a lil sketch in the fact that at nite time u cant decide weather to brake or gas because of the slight dips make it seem like the road is straight when ur entering a turn. and theres a few of my own secret crazy down hill roads, well ok one. but old scholls ferry is fun but its a lil higher speed i suppose. and balk peak as a few ok turns but it has a few long *** straights (going the back way of course, the front has many straights). but i cant tell that crazy down hill one cuz well its on the DL until i can master that ish

humm I got to try some of those roads that you posted afgmoto1978 usually I'll do german town/rockey point and logi trail as well as the old highway/columbia scenic highway and some of the back roads in washougle.
last time I tried the old highway it was about 11-13min from ainsworth to crown point and vise versa. generally mid day is good for both is possible the old highway at night is fun but I'll leave it at that.
Although I dont own a rx-7 (my brother jason does) I like to think that my MR2 does decent. I keep on kicking my self to put on the supercharger to it but their are some other things involved with that....mostly making the flanges and routing the exhaust for the V6
me and my brother will probably see some of you guys at the tuning session next month maybe some of us portland guys should do some drives and such. Their is a really good meet that the MR2 guys are doing down in medford in august that is worth considering. basically we rent their track out for 3 full days and get unlimited use for under $100. it might be worth considering, it's a VERY fun track tight track.

Yep, the top section passed the last restaurant is particularly good on 503.
Video up to that restaurant from the first rest stop Fast forward to 1:15 on the video - http://videos.streetfire.net/video/0...bcdf2ece12.htm

Ahhh, you had to give up some of my good roads, oh well, maybe i'll run into to some of you guys out there
Anyways, definately second german town, but if your car is equiped with coilovers or really low, rocky point is a definate no no. way too rough.
Now if some local people want more salem area roads, PM me.
