Need Info On Seals
Hi All,
So after along discussion with my parents on whether to buy another car or what to do with the rx7, my dad starting being curious about how to rebuild the motor in my current Rx7. I was like WTF? Dad? is this you?
So I'm surpised that he is curious in doing this, so here is what I need to know. I guess if the price is right we are going to pull the motor and rebuild it ourselves.
What I need to know is a run down on costs of a rebuild kit. Like the Seals/apex seals and all that good stuff for a 12a engine.
Please let me know where I can get these, the prices, and or what I need.
Thanks

I pm'ed you back on tuesday and you never replied
"sorry to hear about your misfortune
i don't think i can help but was wondering
what year motor that you needed and if your bad
engines had any usuable parts to piece one back
together to get you by for a while
john from spokane"
I was going to offer you advise then

Last time I asked Atkins about a rebuild kit (complete with apex seals, bearings, gaskets etc.) for a 12a he said it was around $900 I believe. I could be wrong, so you may want to get a hold of Atkins.

id say cheapest rebuild kits would be from 600-900 depending on how complete they are ( some have EVERY thign in the engine, some dont include bearings or oil rings,
you will need a rotor and one or two good housings depending on wear, if u got zero comp on 1 rotor it ate all the seals ,and toasted that rotor and that housing id asume. that might cost <200 for those 3 parts depending on who u get them from

Atkins
Mazdatrix
Dealership ($$$$)
Those are the easiest places to look for seals and stuff. Remember also that if the motor is blown, you'll most likely need more than seals. If it chucks an apex seal you're looking at most likely 1 housing being trashed, possibly an iron or two, and possibly the rotor. Personally, I never buy a "kit" really. I take the engine apart and look at what is NEEDED, what I want to do, and what I think should be done.
Basic things that should always be replaced (IMO at least).
- Apex seals/springs
- Coolant seals
- Oil seals/all o-rings
- Corner seal springs
- Side seal springs
- Various gaskets
- Rotor bearings are cheap and a good idea, so I suggest these as well
- RTV, hylomar, some kind of lube
From there you start checking everything else to see if they are within the acceptable range.

The reason I didn't PM you back is becuase I need a CHEAP motor, I can't be spending $800.00 to rebuild one, and I can't be spending $300-500 on a engine. I need something around $100-200.

well, gaskets will run you $120. you need someone to help you with free labor. and you need to have enough useable core parts to put it together.and don't forget to check your clutch disc too. your parts also have to be compatable,,, for instance you cant mix some 79 and 85 parts together.you need to evaluate what you have and then go from there.

What gaskets would $120 buy (and where)?

He is talking about a 12A. You can get a gasket set from Atkins for $115. Mazdatrix is about the same. The 13b are more (I think my GSL-SE gaskets were $134 when I bought them). The later models (TII and FD especially) cost considerably more.
This is for the full set from Mazda (everything but oil control o-rings, front and rear main seal, and pilot bearing seal).
Jammers is going to have to be lucky and get a used 12A cheap. Maybe he can get one from someone doing a 13b swap. Although many people swap after the 12A is dead and they need a replacement. It will be difficult to really do any kind of a rebuild for that amount. If it was just a coolant seal on a fairly low mileage engine, then you could do it for that. Otherwise you will need to get good rotor housings, rotors, and side housings (depending on damage) from someone for cheap or free. You would also need to use used apex seals for that budget (may be able to find some within spec). I would get aleast new springs and seals (oil control o-rings too). If you could get the used hard parts for free or trade for something, you could maybe do this for $200 (assuming reuse almost everything including clutch). I am not sure how long it will last (depends on how well within spec everything is), but may get you through until you can afford a full rebuild. Good luck with it. I hope you find something.
