HKS SSQ BOV Situation

Well the hks ssq that i have had in my car was from a 3rd gen rx7. I believe it came with a kit, which means mounting flange, and a screw in the back of it to loosen or tighten the spring. Anyway, It was acting up and staying open causing my car to stall. I bought a universal ssq, because i didnt want to spend $300 on a kit. The universal came without the screw in the back of the bov to loosen or tighten the spring. Since both BOV's had the same internals i just took the back end of the ssq from the 3rd gen and attached it to the universal. When i took a test drive the bov didnt sound at all like my 3rd gen one. You can still hear the universal, but not as much. It didnt make that cool whistle noise.

Well i was looking up some information about it and found a post someone on the forums made.

"Its not that universal from what I understand.

Inside the BOV there is a spring. That spring is calibrated to open at a certain boost level and release excess boost. If that spring is of an incorrect 'weight' it will vent boost too early or worse too late. If it opens too late, that is very very bad from what I understand."

What i didnt do was replace the spring from the universal to the 3rd gen one. I'm guessing that might be the problem, even though they looked the same. . .

are you sure you got it from a good source? One might have been a fake! there are a lot of fakes circulating and they're not nearly as good...

HKS recently changed their BOVs. They are no longer adjustable. The last 4 or so BOVs I have gotten in all were without the screw. From what they tell me they were tired of people breaking them so they just made them non-adjustable.

Weird, well alright that explains everything then. I might go back and see what its like without the adj screw. I bought a tool for the c-clip, so it will be a lot easier.

I really havnt been having any problems with the car for the past two days. Its been so cold that with the v-mount my psi has risen a lot. Because its still an internal wastegate ive been over boosting. I had to turn down my boost because i hit 20psi yesterday night, lol. My car suprisingly is running really well. Tomorrow ill be heading into a friends shop to test for any vac leaks.
