Okay, heres the latest. Got the interior panels out of the car and was going to have it picked up on Monday for its voyage to the body shop. The parts should have been ordered yesterday but.............
The body shop guy that Ive been coordinating the project with got to start his vacation to Hawaii yesterday instead of Monday afternoon and the fellow filling his shoes doesnt know the particulars of what we had set up re: parts etc. WTF. I cant believe it, at this rate its going to be the end of July before I get my car back. Whats more, the fill-in dude says I have to pay for the parts myself and have the insurance company cut me a separate check for the parts if I want to get them on the way.
The check has already been sent to the repair shop. I cant believe it - if it wasnt for bad luck, I wouldnt have no luck at all.

Hey Chuck, I just popped in for a update. Sorry to hear that you're having issues with the body shop. Whatever the time frame, it will be worth it to get her back just like you want it. I wasn't satisfied with my last body shop encounter. The guy totally F'd up the gravel guard on the passenger side. All he said was "yeah I had some trouble matching that." As a result, I feel self conscious when ever anyone pulls up on that side. I am shopping around for a repaint-I think I will ditch the gravel guard on both sides and go with some sort of side skirt. Anyhow, best of luck.

If the repair shop does everything as I spec'd it, it should be just like new and even a seasoned expert would have difficulty determining if it had ever been in an accident.
How do they do the gravel guard? Is it a stick on over or under the paint or some type of texturing additive?
Got some good news yesterday. I talked to a local friend who is going to set me up with a set of the 17" 1999 spec wheels in excellent condition since all of mine got bent and now have massive curb rash from the accident.

Good to hear from you! I have been devoting a lot of effort to orchestrating this project so that I get the absolute best results with the repair work. If the repair shop does everything as I spec'd it, it should be just like new and even a seasoned expert would have difficulty determining if it had ever been in an accident.
How do they do the gravel guard? Is it a stick on over or under the paint or some type of texturing additive?

I don't have a clue about the gravel guard and neither did my body guy. He is THE guy in the area for corvettes. The name of his shop is sports car specialty. He's painted a few bumpers and my spoiler for me. I thought he would be okay. You might ask your guys what they do for the gravel guard. My guy tried to spray it and it ended up full of bubbles.

We have a company we work with Autotrim design. They have a product called 3M. What that does is put a clear thick coating over the front bumper and about 1/3 of the way up the hood. This is designed so that if you are on the highway and someone throws up a rock it deflects off of the 3M and does no damage to the paint on the vehicle. They also have packages which will cover the side mirrors from damage as well.

Chris, it's a clear Vinyl made by 3M. It does work wonders. There are a ton of car manufacturers who are offering it on their new cars, mostly the higher end cars. It pretty subtle as well. You can't really notice it unless you're really close or looking for it.

They were very impressed with the condition of my 7 despite the damage from the accident. I made them very aware of how fussy I am about the care and handling of my vehicle while in their possesion.
Estimates are that I should have the car back in about a month.

The body shop finally pulled the front bumper, the right front fender, and the rear bumper. They found more damage that wasnt evident before. The fiberglas bumper that is under the front cover was cracked at both ends and the tranny oil cooler was damaged but not leaking. At the back end the piece that is the support for the tailights is also smashed in on the right side but can be fixed. Not too much more but will push the repair price upwards. I still have $4000 till I reach the insurance companies limit so Im probably still okay.
The repair guy was bitching about the new rear quarter panel having "dents" and ripples in it. It got shipped unscathed as there was no damage to the box. I looked at it and there were a couple of very slight "wows" in the piece. It is all metal and I cant imagine that any large piece that gets shipped is going to be absolutely perfect. Dont body shops typically have to smooth out the contours with a little bondo on most panels that are installed?

I think that there is a process where they heat the metal in a sudo oven?? I had a car shipped from Japan for a Customer and it came in with ripples throughout the roof and hood. They sent it to a collision company who fixed it so I am sure that they have someting they can do for it.

The insurance company totalled the car. The thing that pushed it over the threshold was the RETAIL cost of parts. An example is one of the fog lights is almost $550.
There was no damage to the "frame". The labor pretty much stayed consistent with the original estimate. They found more damaged parts under the bumpers, but all the parts are replaceable with new pieces.
My insurance company paid me several thousand more than I originally paid for the car 4 years ago. It seems the value of these cars is going up!
Anyway, I went ahead and bought the car back, paid my deductible, and still had the money already paid the body shop on the books which was deducted from the total. As I mentioned, the body shop let me purchase all the parts which I got at a substantial discount thanks to Ray Crowe.
The bottom line is that my 7 will be fixed just as good as new and I will have enough money left over to paint the whole car later this year. The one negative is that it will have TOTAL on the title because of the parts replacement cost and not structural damage.
About a week and she will be coming home!!!!!
