a 'gym' for gearheads & geeks- techshop
just thought I'd post this..... It's kind-of a cool concept, or at least I think so.
http://techshop.ws/ and according to the site, one is coming to the Seattle area....
I know many on here are gearheads, some are fabricators, and most of us don't have big shops with really cool tools.... or even access to them. looks like great way to learn/do welding, machining etc.... without buying all the tools or paying a shop at $100+/hr

haha I was imagining a ton of rotor heads running on a tread mill.... sweating and breathing very hard... haha
That idea is pretty dang cool. I have seen a couple places that do stuff like that, but not in terms of a "shop like environment. They only rented garage space and you were allowed to use their regular tools and such, not machinery.

sorry about the confusion..... it's very similar in concept to a gym membership, but instead of weights/machines they are lathes/mills/welders... etc.... once you're trained in the safety & basic use of a tool/machine you can use it, take advanced classes to help hone skills, etc.....
I'm sure that you supply your own materials for whatever you're working on. not sure how how some tooling would work.. i.e wire for a mig welder, welding gases, etc... what about broken tools?
add garage and/or storage spaces to rent by the month as well (everything from a small locker on up) and they'd have an even bigger hit.
great way to spend time off, IMO!

I think I would really really enjoy having a place like this. Another reason I need to move out of yakima, there is nothing here. I hope to move up to kent / renton area after this last year of school.
My brain hurts thinking of all the stuff I could make if I had access to all the tools they have on the website....
solid bushings, intakes, exhaust manifolds, roll cage, turbo heat shields, owww....

I signed up for more infomation on starting one in the Seattle Area. The Puget Sound area has a large pool of talent and shops supporting Aerospace/Boeing. We would be a logical location for a Techshop.
Just need financing and donations of tools from local industy. Not hard, not easy, just takes a dedicated core group to assemble a whitepaper and gather some momentum.
I know a people who know people.

'it's coming' as posted on the website means they are probably looking for investors, a location, equipment (donated and purchased), and people interested/qualified in being instructors and whatnot.... I signed up for the mailing a while back and have not seen any emails yet.
it may take them a while, something like this takes up a big space(basically a warehouse)... and costs a bunch.
personally I'm interested in tig welding, machining(mill, lathe, etc.), cnc plasma cutting, solidworks classes... etc.

I think I will go to that opening party and check out their facilities.
If I'm out of a job early next year this would a excellent resource. $1200 a year really isn't that much if you do the amount of fabrication I do.
Wonder how they would feel if you worked on other people's projects?
Edit: and it's surprisingly close to the new place I will be living at in a few days.

Well as far as painting goes they only plan to have a small booth for powder coating parts.
Once they get the necessary machinery and tooling in place it will be great asset to the gear head community. I may be able create my ground up mid engine racer/sportcar I've been thinking about for some time.
I'd say 95% of the people who showed up last night were pure tinker geeks. It was the biggest nerd gathering I've been to since my days in college, lol.
