oh, does anyone here happen to be able to put a cat in? The new one fried already, BHR was nice enough to send me a replacement but I have no idea how to put it in the pipe.[/QUOTE]

Umh you have some else going on, modern cats should easily last 100k miles, its sounds to me like its dumping a lot a of raw fuel, hence your poor mpg and fried cat. I would have the afr's checked out as a mininum.

BHR sent you a new Davesport CAT or a new midpipe with the Davesport CAT? If they sent you a new pipe then the swap is easy. If just the CAT then any good exhaust shop would be able to cut out the failed CAT and weld in the replacement.

The emissions law changed after the RX8 went into production. Mazda retuned the RX8s to run rich to keep the CAT cool to meet the new Federal Government mandate on how long CATs need to last on all new cars. As a result a loss of power and less MPG.

They just sent me the davesport cat, it had to be welded in. I went ahead and had the Quality Muffler & Brake guy do it in Olympia today. He did the custom exhaust on our old celica and it turned out really nice. Good news is the CEL is gone and hasn't come back so the exhaust system is now trouble free.
the 8 blew the guts out of the cat, it was just hollow. The guy was pretty amused by that. He also asked it the new cat passed emissions, I smiled and said of course it does. No emissions testing in Oly

I suspect it was from the coolant in the old engine, although it is running a little too rich still so I need to fix that somehow. My beautiful racing beat exhaust tips are black too, *sigh*.

I did get an offer for a mazda 6 2008 48k miles looks pretty clean, Daniel now wants to trade for that and go buy a '68 AMX for a project car or one of my dad's 7s and have jesus bang away at it Can someone just tell him if he wants a project car to keep the 8?

Kevin, just go buy it already he wants to sell them both for pretty cheap. Although if you don't hurry we may have to duke it out over the grey one!

The Davesport CAT does not have any packing to blow out. It passes emissions in Oregon and will not throw a CEL. If you were keeping the 8 then I'd recommend get the Cobb AP and have MM tune your car.

Couple of things. Why did you put a cat in there in first place if you live in an emissions exempt area?

Second I have the RB exhaust too, and my tips are black after a couple days. Just gotta keep wiping them off.

Good ol quality brake & muffler is a great place, hes an old school muscle car gear head. Reason he asked about the cat is because hes been burned by honda kids years ago, they got custom exhausts from him with no cat setups. The honda crew then decided to race around town with their cars which would always get pulled over. They told cops where they got the hookup from and his shop almost got shutdown........working on cars with no cats is illegal

Anyways, You know I would of bought the gray fb a long time ago if my project didnt require all of my spare money. Damn turbo Rx7's

For us actually moving to a car that gets 30mpg would save us nearly 5k a year, we drive a lot.

Also to be honest, I actually prefer the RX7s over the 8s. I would totally consider it worth it if I had either a 1st or 3rd gen. I think that's my problem, I just have the wrong RX model
trade you my FB for the 8! lol. It gets 27 mpg :x

Not sure what you mean by no packing, when you look in a new one it has white honeycomb in it, it's not hollow. The fried one was completely hollow with no honeycomb whatsoever. So it definitely blew something out.

Oh and we got the cat system because we may be moving soon, other areas do test emissions. Plus it downright stinks without it, how can you stand the smell?

Hmm didn't know that about the quality muffler guy, but I did see a bunch of pictures of neat classic muscle cars all over that he's worked on. Funny thing is when I mentioned that Daniel put the exhaust on he said it was neat that we liked working on cars, he then said he hates to work on cars Been in the business too long I guess, or it's from those honda drivers. In fact I blame them
