Will not shut off.

I own three RX7s. Usually I get problems like "it runs rough", "it will not start".....
But this one is "it will not turn off."(car runs great) I have removed the ignition switch completely, I mean I unplugged the switch and took it out of the car and I still have voltage at the main relay. To shut it off I have to pull the 30 amp EGI fuse. Has anyone had this trouble before me? Surely.... Any one have a suggestion? This is a 1986 NA.
Thanks in advance.

The Main Relay normally has constant voltage on the White/Blue and Black/Green wires in the 4 wire plug. Disconnect the 2 wire plug to the relay and see if the B/W wire has voltage on it w/the key to off. It should only have voltage w/key to on and start. When this 2 wire plug is removed also check the other two wires in the 4 wire plug for voltage with this 4 wire plug still connected to the relay as they should not have it (Black/White wire and Black/Yellow wire). Also, have you done anything to the alternator recently for if the two wire plug connected on the back of it is reversed it could cause the problem you identified.

I'm not much of an electrical dude but if you stall the engine with the ignition off is there still power to the ignition components? if so I would guess you have a short somewhere .. even a screwed up ground can cause many weird problems ( if there is ground problems it is possible that it is seeking power from a different source .. Did this just happen or has it bothered before ?? I guess I am thinking on the same sort of lines as Satch

This too as well. There is a plug alongside the steering column which has two wires where one is Black and the other is Black/White. This plug connects to the ignition harness. The B/W wire should only have voltage w/key to on and start.

With all plugs disconnected from the switch I still had voltage on the main relay coil. Let me check the alternator wiring. I recently had the intake off in search of a vacuum leak. My alternator plug has been removed and a set of crimp on terminals installed. It is possible that they are switched. By the way I had a generator light warning prior to this showing up. Advance Auto hooked up their machine to my car and handed me a print out of the charging system giving it a clean bill of health. This problem might not show up on their analyzer.

The Black/White wire is above the White/Black wire at the alternator.

So you are saying the both the B/W wire in addition to the B/Y wire in the 4 wire plug at the Main Relay had voltage on it when the 2 wire plug is removed from the relay? This needs to be checked. If so then the relay is stuck in the closed position which would cause the B/Y and B/W wire to have constant voltage when it should not.

I'll have to get back to you on wire colors tested as it has been a couple of weeks since I looked at it. I can say that the relay tested good out of the car. The contacts make and brake. This evening I should be able to retest everything.
Thanks for the sugestions and if I can be of help let me know.

Satch you were close, I wouldn't have found it without your input. The wires from the alternator were grounding out. Backfeed?? Lifted the wires off the engine and now it shuts off. System voltage increased and my alarm panel is back.

Good to hear as there is nothing like an easy fix to what might appear as a serious problem.
