twinturbo trouble

i recently( month ago) got a 91 r1, before then had a 89 fc GTUs n/a.... but it smoked bad and the guy i got it from said the seal on the turbo was blown....so past couple days after a month in the garage i finally started tearing it down.... a whole lot of effort and the twins are finally off i got some used replacments on the way but all the trouble to get them off wants me to go single turbo.... im sure with the motor pulled would be easier but no resources for that. would it be easier to go single? or stick it out with re installing the used twins??

Going single will cost you thousands of dollars. You'll need an upgraded fuel system, programmable ECU, exhaust, large intercooler, boost controller, and a few other things I'm not thinking of. It's not a job you can do with just the stock twins unbolted. It's a comprehensive project, and depending on what your car has already you might need all of it.

It sounds to me like your stock twins are off and you're debating what to put back in. If you were getting good boost out of the original twins, I'd buy a good used set off the classifieds and get the car on the road. It'll cost under $500.

Then you can go about determining what you want, what you already have, and what you need to get there.

Dave

PS: What's a 91 R1? Are you referring to the datecode on the door sticker? (US 3rd gens started as "93"s and arrived here in 92. Build dates on 93s indicate the first ones came out of the Hiroshima factory in 11/91)

stay twin, or it will cost you a fortune. some nice 99 spec ones will give you a good 340hp+ quite happily with upgraded fuel & cooling system

sorry i meant 93 R1 touring hybrid ( has both cruise control, moon roof, ect and dual oil coolers ect.....

yeah i figured it wouldnt be a simple bolt on bolt off project, i got the twins off but they are still sitting in there cause i cant get them out...thats why i want to go single cause i spent like 8 hrs just getting them off...was hell...and i was look at conversion threads but havnt really seen anyting as far as the whole transition....

My mods right now include: 30k on rebuild and overhaul, port and polish intake & exhaust, atkins 3mm apex seals, powertrain management computer, pmc software, pmc keypad, innovate mtor sports modular tunning system, xs engineering power pack ignition amplifier, PFs racing tmic, PFs 3" stainless exhaust, Off road down pipe(brand?), koyo radiator, mazdaspeed trans, PFs heavy duty 6puck clutch, surfaced flywheel......... and PFs tubular sway bar set, PFs bigbrake package, willimbro calliburs, cross drilled rotors, tein 5-way adjustable suspension.....also has egr elimination and block off, and twins were non-seqential

in the twin take off i damaged the oil feed rail, a few vacum lines but bascially it was alot of work to get as far as i did with the motor in, and the single conversion seemed it would be simplier

I don't see fuel mods listed in your stuff, but I see a lot.

I humbly suggest you take your time and get to know this setup really well. Don't try to push more power until you've gotten things thoroughly sorted. Get some good silicone vacuum hose and make sure all of those go back exactly per the vacuum diagram. (Link in the 3rd Gen FAQ)

I hope those eBay turbos work out for you. While I believe used turbos are a great idea, eBay sellers are often a mixed bag. Got a link to the auction?

You listed "Mazdaspeed trans". What's that?

yeah and i talked to the previous owner he said he only did a fuel filter and owner before that put in an upgraded fuel pump if he remembers right...... there were alot eliminations and turbos were non sequential so wasnt too many lines, and most of them were silicone also..... yes it has a mazdaspeed trans, thats what i was told or was rebuilt by mazdaspeed?..... no link but i know the good turbo i had was rebuilt and only has like 20k on it so imma swap that out and hope the primary is decent to get me by 5-10k but still at a stand still as far as single vs twins
