Told by a shop that a rebuild is not possible.
Too much wear on the rotor housings and the rear plate. They say using an REW 13b is not recommended and want 14k to put one of their sourced and rebuilt 13bTT units in the car.
I see motor/transmissions on eBay from Japan for a few grand...
What is my best option to get my 93 auto FD back on the road after the loss of a coolant seal?

Definitely not an eBay/import core, I can tell you that with certainty.
And $14k sounds like either one hell of race motor, or what I call the "go home" price. The shop doesn't know/doesn't want to mess with the rotary, and gave you a price so ridiculous that you won't pay it and leave them alone.

If it is only a coolant seal, that shop is trying to rape you, unless you let the rotor housing rust up to the point where they would be unusable. Even still, 14k, you can rebuild 4 13bs for that price.
Pull the engine apart and rebuild it yourself. If the housing are reusable, it should cost you under 2k.
Also, ebay engines are hit or miss. I got lucky. you might not.

Go to another shop.
By the way EBay is not the Magical land that GOOD engines sit until yours pops.
You may as well take your money..toss it in the wind.
You pay a 12 year old with a high pressure water sprayer 6 cents a day to clean engines, then expect a full working 100% running engine?
That engine sits in a Shipping container for 6 months then gets shipped across half a world and then some "unsuspecting" buyer installs it and it doesn't work.
I wonder why?

Do not be fooled, for every 1 person that got lucky and had a good outcome, there are 20+ people with the opposite story. Rebuilders won't even use those motors for parts any more, they've been burnt so many times. Usually nothing in reusable and then you've got a massive paperweight.

If you can get them to send you a video of the compression check, at least you can get a rebuildable core.

I have no affiliation with them, but you can have a newly rebuilt and ported engine shipped to you from Addicted Performance in TN for around $3200ish or so. You can find their stuff in the for sale section. They will ship it to your door. YOu just swap your parts over and put it back in.
The only shop I know in Texas, and a hell of a tuner, is Steve Khan out of Dallas. Look up Khan tuning on FB or webpage. Great guy. He can do it all for you at his shop if you are not mechanically inclined.

The Joys of Texas, this is the only shop within 450 miles of my location that I know of.
It's looking like I'll have to venture into finally tearing the motor apart myself.
5-6k is doable and to me reasonable for a rebuilt engine. 10 and up for a stock replacement is just exorbitant to me.
FWIW I live closest to Lubbock, Pretty much right in the armpit of the panhandle.
FWIW one of the listed links above this post was the quoter on this one. *I'm still holding receipts from them from the previous owner as well."

Hmm, that gives me a great business idea. I'm thinking about starting a company that uses trucks, ships, and airplanes to deliver stuff for people. Maybe I will call it FEDEX, UPS, DHL, or something like that. Nah, never mind, it will never work.

You can get a brand new BREW for 4.5k...
https://www.rx7club.com/3rd-generati...-sale-1095998/
Of course even that is too much if all you need is water seals

With enough $$$, Prayer, and belief anything can be crafted or rebuilt.
In the last few years I've had horrifying experiences with everyone but DHL, who admittedly I've never used, and the last thing I'd want to do is crate an engine that I havent disassembled myself to send to a shop I've never worked with.
Because, you know.... shipping a motor is super cheap.
I also trust any shop about as far as I can throw them till I've had personal experience with them. I only allow people to touch my cars after I've known enough people who have been there to justify giving them a chance.
FWIW, I would rather learn a new skill than give someone a chance to mess my car up.
I lost my first Camaro to a dealers GM certified shop mechanic's F up(long story here).
I had over 1000$ in paint damage when I allowed a well trusted local shop to rebuild the differential in my Trans Am.
I've had repeated bad experiences with well reviewed service departments where it never fails that a "new" problem pops up immediately after the car is brought in for an unrelated issue. Including the replacement of a PCM in my Grand Prix this summer after it was sent in to recharge the AC system.
So, while I value the members of this communities experience and opinions, even if they're sarcastic, I hope you can understand my hesitance to pull and crate a motor to somewhere without taking a look at it myself first.

Why would they not recommend, or refuse to use the REW platform?
From everything I've read it takes slight modification/none to be used as a replacement for our FD 13b's.
... except for the two shops that I linked above.
Right, because it's not like you could put the engine in a crate and ship it anywhere in the world for a decent shop to rebuild it.

You're being given good advice but seems that you don't want to listen.
Rotary Performance (RX7.com) out in Garland Texas are one of the best in the country.
You can literally drop your FD off with them and receive a completely, 100% correctly rebuilt rotary engine and FD3s. It's that simple

Actually, it is in fact super cheap.
I now see the problem, and I should have realized it earlier with your tax return comment. You are broke and you are new to this forum so you think it is like the Honda kiddie forums where everybody acts like a wealthy pimp gangsta. Well, we are not like that. We are either broke or cheap, otherwise we would be on the Lamborghini forum. Therefore, be yourself and you will get better answers to your questions, and you will not waste the time of those who bothered to try to help you.
OK, fine, you can't afford to have a professional rebuild your engine. Do you want links to rebuild videos, or did you once have a bad experience with a video and refuse to ever watch another one?

FWIW Rotary Performance did all the maintenance for the first owner and was the first place that I called. I don't doubt their work based on what I've read through the years, however when they state that based on the conditions that are calling for a rebuild that its a 14k estimate turnkey to replace the motor because replacement rotor housings for the FD have become a rarity, and that they wont consider/dont recommend the use of REW blocks... it causes me to come here to ask what others in this area do.

I simply don't give second chances to places that can't complete a job right. They only hear from me if its going to cost me more than 100$ to fix their mistakes.
Atkins is a great resource, There's a guy on youtube as well, cant remember his name right now, long curly hair though, he's got some good rebuild videos as well.

The FD comes with a 13B-REW block, that's pretty much all that will go back in unless you like to move backwards and make things complicated.
Did you speak to Chris Ott? Either someone at RP is feeding you a load of B.S., or you're full of B.S.
Which one is it?
