Please be careful!! I don't think any part should come off before the tension of the spring is released.
I had a similar setup on Nissan I owned.
1. Safety first.
2. Get a spring compressor. ( It is doable without but it is seriously not recommended.)
3. Loosen the top nut on the strut a few turns. It is better to do on the car.
4. Compress the spring until there is just a bit of slack.
5. Remove the nut, strut mount and any other part on the top of the strut.
6. The strut casing has a very large nut on the top. Find a wrench to fit, I used a pipe wrench
7. Screw the strut to the concrete.... . Sorry, Secure the strut somehow. I had to remove parts of the front wheel to attach to the strut and laid it in the grass. I stood on the part and tried with all my strength to get the large nut loose. Improvise with a giant vise or wait for better advice.
8. After the nut is off, the strut cartridge should...... come out... with some fluid possibly.
9. Clean the inside and outside a well as you feel necessary, especially the inside. I would spray some rust converter and paint afterwards to the outside.
10. I don't remember the assembly. There are some tricks to modify these to fit larger inserts...I think. I think some fluid? is added and the nut is then replaced. Assembly is reverse of disassembly. The strut mount on some cars need reinstalled on the car facing a certain direction. I am nut sure about these.
11. Please stop if you don't feel comfortable doing this... springs are dangerous!!
Welcome the the forum.
Get the service manual online. I checked Foxed.ca and it is broken on my browser.
Someone please correct me here. I am sure that I missed. something.
Thanks so much. So what you're saying is the new strut sits inside the housing that is apart of the spindle?
I was heating it up and was thinking the whole thing came out of the spindle! I was about to start wacking it with a hammer, I am glad I didnt as I am sure that wouod have dented the housing a bit to much to get the cartridge out.
Again thanks alot. I love this forum/webpage/group.
After compressing the spring and removing the top nut, you'll come to the gland nut that sits inside the tube. After removing the gland nut, there is a spring on the inside in a bath of oil. From the factory, there is no cartridge. The after market replacement will be a cartridge. Use some oil when installing the new cartridge.
