Smog in ca
Hi, I just bought an 88 turbo 2 rx7 for 1400, the car runs like a champ, interior is clean, Only problem is took it to get smoged and the air pump( I think the guy meant smog pump) is blown, and the car has no cats, the guy quoted me over 1000 to get it up to spec, thats a joke right?
There has to be an easier way to get it to pass? he was telling me i needed specific model cats to pass, 3 of them each running 250 each.
Any advice or help would be appreciated

You can often buy used air pumps and the associated equipment (ACV, split air pipe, etc.) from the classifieds section of this forum for almost no money. Then use an aftermarket high flow cat. The problem is that won't pass the visual even though it should pass the sniffer if the car is in good tune. Best bet is to find a used set of cats (should be VERY cheap on this forum) and install them.

You technically need the precat (a turbo only has 1, N/As are the ones w/ 2), but I've passed smog for years with only a main cat. Get yourself a good stock main cat or replacement, swap the air pump and give it another shot. Find yourself a smog tech that isn't super **** about checking every detail, and the lack of precats won't even matter. Once the engine is warm, the main cat does almost all of the work, so the HC/CO/NOx numbers can still come out fine.
