Single Turbo FD3S Build Plan

I've found an EXTREMELY helpful source in Phoenix, AZ. I won't name him yet, just to keep his privacy, unless he allows me to name him otherwise...but so far he is the only "works out of his garage" kind of guy I've been able to get in touch with that knows a thing or two about his FDs.

I contacted him with the hopes of turning my TT RX7 into a single turbo street/track machine. So far so good, we have a build planned out- just wanted to consult the collective knowledge that is rx7club.com.

Turbo options-
-Gt35R- $1385
- GTX35R- $1860 (Tial SS turbnine housing)
Wastegates-
-Tial 38mm -$250 each
-Tial 44mm- $350 each
Emissions removal
- block off plates- $100
- Top end of engine tear down to remove/replace components- $250
Standalone EMS
Not sure what I would be wanting here, I would assume Power FC but let me know if there are better standalones
Fuel system
-Top feen fuel rails, regulator, and all needed lines and fittings- quite a few choices to discuss, range from $600-1000
-4 ID1000 fuel injectors $110 each
-fuel pump, I'd recomend a Supra TT pump ~$150ish for a used one.
-removal of oldparts/installation of above items- $225

Looking at about $5,500~ to go single turbo. The question is, is it worth it? Should I also consider setting up auxiliary injection if I'm running more than 14 PSI? Also if I'm only running 14 psi boost, should I stick with 44mm wastegates or are the 38mm Tial externals enough for that amount of boost? And is there anything I'm missing as far as building a single turbo FD RX7?

You don't seem to have a manifold listed there.

The GTX35R is more efficient at higher boost levels and airflows, so it depends on how much boost you are going to run whether it's worth running over the standard GT35R. I have no experience with the Tial stainless housing but the thing I don't like about them is that they aren't twin scroll. I wouldn't consider any turbo that isn't divided.

You're going to want the 44MM wastegate. And for 14 PSI, I'd suggest the standard 35R. You can always go GTX later if you want.

Don't see a mention about the intercooler.

1000CC primaries can be a bit hard to maintain a smooth idle with, regardless of how fancy the injector is.

Sounds like a nice build. For that price tag you're getting both high quality and well selected parts.

I trust you have significant cooling, exhaust, and intake upgrades already in place.

The PowerFC will handle that load and quite a bit more with ease. Yes there are always "better" ECU's if you want higher capabilities but very few people ever exceed the capabilities of that platform. With an FD you want the best possible tune, and if the complexity of the tuning platform affects the overall quality of the tune, I see that as a negative not a benefit.

Depending on how long ago you've changed your emissions wiring harness, I'd consider doing that. Good low mileage wiring harnesses modified for single turbo use are sometimes available for sale on the classifieds here or you can just buy one from Mazda and alter it yourself.

Oh right, I forgot to mention the turbo manifold is going to be a fully TIG welded 304L stainless pipe, but the downpipe he didn't really mention much about. Also, yes most of the reliability mods have been done to this car- Greddy 3 row intercooler, fan switch mod, larger aluminum radiator and custom fabricated carbon fiber dual oil cooler ducting. We're going to be removing the emissions from the car, and I'm going to be (hopefully I'll be able to afford) removing my old exhaust and installing a test pipe, and a Racing Beat exhaust or something that won't make my car sound too ridiculously loud.

You have a similar setup compared to my car? Or you're looking at building something similar to what I'm aiming for? Either way, about half of the hard work was done (as you could see) before I contacted this gentleman about helping me with this single turbo build. The previous owner also took off the UIM and replaced Medusa's head with silicone hoses for good measure

v-mounts are so expensive, haha. But yes, I know they're the best set up when it comes to intercooling
