Retaping a first gen rear axle shaft

have axle shaft stripped at the lug bolt pattern. what would be the best procedure for doing this?

Please note that my car's previous owner did something to accomodate aftermarked wheels. The lugs for those wheels aren't traditional. They are more like bolts that insert into the axle shaft's threaded 110mm hole pattern. I need to figure out clearances (height of bolt) , prefered size of the tapped replacement "bolts", the lugs that will go on these bolts and any words of wisdom on this matter.

Also note that i'm away from my car and need a plan of attack when I see it again during Memorial Day weekend.

The two most abundant elements on the planet are hydrogen and clueless previous owners. ------ unknown

I'd just have a machine shop do the work. They can weld up the damaged hole, redrill and tap while keeping everything the correct dimension.

Interesting you should suggest that, I happen to work at a sheetmetal fabrication facility in the middle of nowhere Nebraska. I talked to some of the guys that have had to "fix" holes that way. There is a problem insuring that voids will not be present in the filled area for this thickness. The next problem is that the metal will be really hard to drill, that means removing it from the car and trying to get it into a drill press, and making damn sure they hit the mark. So this means I would need a spare axle if a skrew up happens.

Note: Finding first gen Rx-7's in junk yards isn't likely. There aren't too many of these cars in Nebraska and Iowa.

Aarron You have just given me an idea. I can drill out other 4 bolt patterns into the other sides of this axle and that option might help me out down the road.

Until then I'm willing to entertain other suggestions that will help at the present. Any other ideas?
