Rebuilt engine

"Usual" is a dangerous word.
If you're staying stock, and you do the R&R yourself, the cost can be as low as $1000 if all of your hard parts are good. Shipping, R&R labor, modifications, replacement housings and side housings often drive that price very much higher.
On an FD, (I'm an FD owner so that's what I'm familiar with) the average "stock" rebuild is probably $3k-4k plus R&R labor. Plus on an FD there are many parts that often need replacement that aren't part of the standard engine rebuild kit - engine harness, fuel lines, injector servicing, oil metering lines, etc that can add another grand or two.
