It sounds like you're on the right track. Do the mods that make the car fun for you.

Regardless of what your intentions are, if you feel that you want one fore the sole purpose of drifting then go for it. In the end it's your car and your decision. I got one simply because it has always been a dream of mine to own an Rx7. Stock or modified, nothing beats the style and performance of one.

Holler fellow men. I believe you own the car for whatever reasons, but be sure they are yours and yours alone.

The weight ratio makes it one of the well most balanced car on the road not to mention mazda when they were actually JDM hit the nail on the head with independant suspension.

Plus flip up lights are just retro cool and signify a piece of automotive history

I have an FC for the same reason I have had three of them in the past 18 months. I LOVE the car, and I don't care what happens with the last one, I will find another one. There is just something about the car that feels right, like this is how things were meant to be. I get a certain feeling every time I get in the car. I know that I get to experience something somebody else loved and a piece of engineering artwork that was slaved over to bring us the very best of the time.

I often get asked why do I have a 23 year old car when I could have something newer and nicer and no rust and better gas mileage and blah blah blah. I usually smile and say, because I don't want anything else. I don't want to be just another person using their car as a tool, I use it as a toy and something I have built a passion around, something that I dont care to spend my money or countless hours in the garage fixing one thing after another. I enjoy knowing I own something different from everyone else. I enjoy knowing that I have a certain personality that my car is the foundation of.

I have a friend that after I wrecked my first FC asked if I was going to get another one. I said I didn't know. His response? "You have to, you just wouldn't be Daulton without one." I think THAT, is the best reason to own an FC.

I love FC's... But I can honestly think of more reasons to not have them than to have it. I think I've had more worse luck than most here.

Pros
Look cool
Has pop up headlights
Handles well and is light
Has a rotary engine
Has a rotary engine
Has a rotary engine

Cons
Turbo rotaries don't seem to last as long as n/a rotaries
Wiring nightmare
You'll grow to hate trouble shooting and fuel injection
Rotary engines are expensive to own (few rebuilders, expensive parts)

Don't get an RX7 if your not willing to accept the downside of having an engine no one has in trade for having a really cool and quick engine no one has. A 240 will get you drifting cheaper and more reliably.

If a 7 is for you, I'd either get a first gen that's carb'd or get an na FC and put a carb on it. So sick of fuel injection and wiring issues.

many uses

There are many practical uses for a rx but they are also great platforms with near 50/50 wait distributions making it really easy to get sideways and control as well. You might as well at least give it a few shot on the track and see whats its all about and maybe you can make your own decision as to weather its for you or not.

I don't exactly agree with price and wiring thing. It's rare these days if you can find an RX7 turbo of any yr with a stock turbo. If it does it will need to be replaced. Do the right mods and it will last you a while. Other than the people afraid of rotary powered car think like that. If you want to be an every day ride and drift once or twice a month what makes the 240 a better choice? A 240 will probably cost more to buy. My opinion. I've owned 3 n/a RX7s. Now I got my 10th ae. All fun as Hell to drive. I have to admit I did have it completely rebuilt and had a stage 2 clutch and streetport. But it was the 3" exhaust that really woke it up! Under $300. Then from there the money flowed over the 10 yrs I've had it. But it was my choice. If you don't care that the clock don't work and you might have to pull the fuel pump relay once in a while. For prob $5k you could have a turbo fc. Everyday ride. Can't buy the $300. Bov and wastegate . This is my opinion. There's nothing at that price that you can be cruising at 60mp. In 3rd , about 4000 rpm and stomp it and hit 100 mph like a crotch rocket... Only a turbo rotary. Go to the track. If they do own engine swap its about $600. For a used engine. it's all what you want to do...

If drifting is something you want to do, why not just set that as a goal for the future? I don't see why you can't eventually achieve that goal.

Get the car you want, and do what you want with it, and don't let someone or anyone else give you crap about what you've done.

Instead of asking why everyone else has an RX7, why not ask yourself why you want one. Or what's appealing about it. Then just go with it dude!

Drifting is only one aspect of having this awesome car!

Awesome, I had a few friends who had similar response to me when we chatted, they said it would simply be weird if I wasn't driving a FC.

And my response to the original post, FC is one of the 80's Japanese super car, the question should be 'why not own one?'

Try autocrossing , its cheap much much cheaper then drifting , Very fun , and not to hard on the car.

plus it makes you a better driver .. win win win. and you have a reason to modify the car.

plus you can drift the car al ittle bit if you want to or even by accident hah
