Random electrical gremlins (hiding behind the dash)

I have an 88 RX7 SE, I am having some electrical issues wondering if anyone might be willing to loan some knowledge.

1. My idiot lights only work when the outside temp is above 65. anything else and they are intermittent at best.

2. My rear defroster only works on the top quarter of the glass.

3. My interior lights dont work at all.

4. Not one buzzer works on the car (dont really know if thats a bad thing or not based on what people have said about the sounds they make)

Thats all I can think of right now, I'm sure I'm missing a couple but its 4am and my brain hurts.

Sounds like the room fuse is blown and you have a damaged rear defrost grid

I have the same gremlins too. Be glad the buzzers aren't going off. Sometimes I have one that goes on and off for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. My clock and oil pressure only work when they want too.

Hey mine are even worse!

Inside lights don't work. One turns on/off every once in a while.

Wind screen wipers work on only the slow setting.

Rear windscreen wiper only works above 5000rpm.

Glovebox light works only with headlights off.

Read demister only works on the left side.

Nothing but tacho and speedo work due to microtech ECU that sits in the glovebox.

Air con controls don't work.

CD player power wire runs from cigarrette lighter, so therefore no permanent power to it and it forgets its settings.

Replace blown fuses as a start

Bad light switch or light switch harness, replace both (and this is covered in the FAQ for FC sticky thread found both here at the top of this section and the top of the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section. You always want to read the FAQ for FC sticky thread before posting... many of the commonly asked questions (like this one) are covered there.

Bad relay in the wiper switch, rebuild the switch or buy another (and this is covered in the FAQ for FC sticky thread found both here at the top of this section and the top of the 2nd gen RX-7 technical section. sounds like a major voltage issue or really bad connections on the hatch strut.

Glovebox light works only with headlights off.
Well the glove box light only works when the parking lights are on, so if it is not working when the headlights are on, chances are that your parking lights are also not working...and of course parking lights not working are covered in the FAQ for FC, and is probably a bad light switch or light switch harness, replace both.

Read demister only works on the left side.
Not possible, as the traces run across the car's rear window. If there are damaged traces, then the whole line stops working, not just one side.

Nothing but tacho and speedo work due to microtech ECU that sits in the glovebox.
The gauges are not wired to the ECU, so they should work regardless of what ECU or how it is wired. Did you check the meter fuse? If the fuses is good, more than likely the senders are unplugged at each sensor/sender or you have loose or disconnected connections on the back of the cluster...

Air con controls don't work.
What part? if it is all of them, the Logicon (climate controller) is probably unplugged.

CD player power wire runs from cigarrette lighter, so therefore no permanent power to it and it forgets its settings.
sounds like Micky Mouse wired that. There is a constant powered wire in the factory wiring for the stock radio.

Well I got all my fuses situated, it looked like the PO had bought a box a 15A fuses and shoved them in at random. After spending a little time correcting all of the fuses I now have interior lights. My idiot lights and clock still only work randomly. My clock will come on when the car is first started and then quickly fad out, and the idiot light cluster only works when it wants to. Usually the lights work when activated, for example my brake light will come on when I apply the parking brake. With exception to the door light it only works when it feels like it. I really am lost when it comes to electrical components, aside from stereo stuff. I figured something was wrong with the defroster grid. Looks like I will just have to wipe/scrape my glass in the mornings.

The clock/warning panel may need re-soldering, but the fact that you interior lights still are acting up suggests maybe the fuse is loose or the plug is loose? I suppose it is also possible that the door switches are bad, as well as the clock warning panel.
