Former Moderator. RIP Icemark.
The R option package was available on the 93-95 RX-7, the JDM Bathhurst and Spirit RX-7s and the 09 RX-8
It was basically a heavy duty suspension, aero parts, and a race inspired interior (cloth seats for example on the RX-7 and the Recaro's on the RX-8). The RX-8 R3 also has dedicated aero parts such as side skirts). You typically can not get a factory sunroof on most R package cars. Some versions also came with dual oil coolers and strut braces.
The R package is really a re-name of the 86-87 Sport Option Package that later became the 88 GTU and then 89-90 GTUs model. With the FD that sports/racing option package became the R package.
On the 93 RX-7, the sport/racing option package was only called the R, but when Mazda reset the option package with slightly softer suspension settings in 94, the changed the name to the R2 package to differentiate it from the harder suspension 93 R package... of course this rename then made the 93 with the sports package the R1.
