power cuts out on hard left turns

Hey, I have an 88 turbo and whenever I make a hard left turn where I am generating a little bit of g force, the power just completely falls off to nothing until I the g force is releived, then it cuts back in like normal. There is no similar problem on right hand turns. I read the FAQ's. Is this the fuel sock? If so, are there any diagrams showing how to access/change it?

Open the fuel tank access hatch and make sure that the fuel sock is not clogged and that the baffles are in place.

The Factory Service Manual can be found in the FAQ For FC thread. It contains all this information and more, and is an essential tool for any sort of service work that needs to be performed on these cars.

Additionally, the Haynes service manual for the 1986 thru 1991 RX-7 (both turbo and NA) can be found at most local auto parts stores or purchased from any good bookstore (ISBN number 1 56392 007 7). It is only about $25 and is a great quick reference for things like this. Not only does it contain most of the information in the FSM condensed into an easy to read format, but it includes full wiring diagrams as well.

These manuals will answer 99% of service related questions for the car and if you intend to do your own repair work, you will need at least one of them. Preferably both, since the FSM is a free download.

Awesome, thanks! I am going to go open it up and take a look as soon as I get to check the rest of the replys to my questions. Thanks for all your help. This may be a dumb question, but if the sock is dirty is it cleanable or do I need to order a new one from the dealership? Also, if the baffles are messed up/rusted away is there anything that can be done about that?

checked it, fuel sock?

I checked your recomendation and pulled the fuel pump. The sock/screen thing did appear to have some fine debris in it, but since I didn't have a replacement I could only try to clean it off a bit. The baffle or border around the fuel pump in the tank seemed to be securely in place although I did see some rust in the bottom of the tank. I am still puzzles as to why the fuel or power would cut out only on left hand turns. If the screen/sock is clogged wouldn't it affect the power in straight lines as well? Just wondering. Can I order a new screen only or would I have to order a new fuel pump to replace the existing sock? Thanks

You can order a new sock from your local Mazda parts dept. It will come with a press-on clip that will hold the sock in place. Get the parts catalog at:

Cool. Thanks for the link. It looks like a lot of great resources are there. I will see about getting a new sock and see if it helps the problem.

How much fuel was in the tank when it was cutting out on you? I've never had any experience with it, but I've heard guys talk about it happening when they have less than a quarter tank of gas. It has something to do with centrifugal force and the location of the fuel pump.
Once again dunno if that's what you're dealing with, but since I've heard others talking about it I thought I would pass it along.
