Pilot bearing Question
#4
I think the installer tool replicates the transmission input shaft. So if you get it close (within a mm or so) it should seat itself to the proper depth as you bolt up the transmission.

bearing only goes in far enough to get the seal in. the space between it and the bottom of the hole is so it can be pulled out. i think installation tools r made to put it at the correct depth.

Pilot bearing installer tool ----> Clutch And Flywheel Tools
If you don't want to buy the install tool do what I do. Remove the bearing, clean and lube the hole just a bit. I use the big flat head of a sheetmetal hammer and lots of small taps....being careful to start the bearing straight. Takes a while but it goes in. Once flush, I use the old bearing to counter sink the new in just enough for so the dust seal can be installed. As mentioned above, get it close and the transmission input shaft will seat it the rest of the way. The bearing comes greased, but I usually augment it a little just to be sure...but don't over-do it. Too much and the hydraulic pressure won't let you install the transmission.
That said, seems like I've done it enough times on different cars that I'd consider getting the tool next time.
