VA Passing Emissions with a aftermarket DP and HFC

So I just picked up a 94 RX7 Turbo for my brother who is overseas in Japan with the Navy. I have no clue about these car or the rotory engine, but is no stranger to cars. I drive MR2 turbo. IM trying to have the car pass emsission legally in the state of VA. My question is will it pass emission test with an aftermarket DP and HFC from RX7store.com to stock exhaust. The shop I had it at said that there is no cat. Just a DP and striaght pipe to OE exhaust. So they couldnt even start a emission test. At the moment there is no air pump connected, but trying to source one as we speak cause i know your prob gonna need one to pass. I just trying to figure what all i need before i get under the car and replacing parts. As far as i know the car is all stock other than M2 ECU. ANy info would help.

you will need a catalytic converter. The bonez cat will work as long as you don't move to california. I am not too familiar with FD's but like any other rotary engine, they should have an airpump system which pumps air to the catalytic converter. Make sure you have all emissions equipment still in the car and hook up the cat. The cat will have a split air pipe tube (looks like a small tube to the side of it) which your emissions equipment hooks up to it to get the fresh air in the catalyst.

Besides having all your emissions equipment and a catalytic converter, you should be ok. I have never shopped at rx7store.com so I will not attempt to go into that.

Find the factory service manual and start looking over all the things you are missing.

I don't know the laws in VA but here in California you will fail the visual inspection on any aftermarket exhaust components before the muffler that aren't CARB approved.

So with a new airpump and all the emission componets installed, I should have no prob passing VA emissions with the aftermarket down pipe? I guess, my question really is? Is the aftermarket DP gonna give me any issues passing emission? Theres a O2 sensor installed.

Yeah Ive been seraching for a repair manuel, but the only one i can find is this DVD from rotartyaviation.com. Heres the link. http://www.rotaryaviation.com/overhaul_video.htm I dont mind paying for this, but i was looking for a paperback or PDF. Something a bit easier to refer too when Im under the car.

Its differeant from county to county in VA. I know ways around emission in VA. I just need this car legit on papers. Up here in Northern VA they are strict.

Depending on how the rest of the car is running and how stringent VA smog laws are, it should pass with a downpipe and a cat. The stock cat, when in good working condition with a working air pump, does a better job of filtering exhaust for smog. Some high flow cats do a good enough job with a working air pump. I recommend the Bonez high flow cat from rx7.com if you are looking for one.

There are some rotary shops in VA and DE and WDC region in general. You can find them by looking in the regional sub forum for your area. There should be a sticky there. PFSupercars.com is one local place that readily comes to mind.

Careful driving the car if its new to you. W/o a cat, the car may run more boost than you have fuel for. Rotaries do not like to be run lean and can easily blow the motor.

Well, I dont know about VA, But I just took the test for my emissions inspection license in PA, and one of the primary concerns is that all factory emissions controls must be in place and appear to be hooked up and working, in PA you can also get a waiver for emissions after failing the test and you spend more than $150 on related repairs, BUT you can not bill yourself for labor, and you can not include whatever it cost to bring the car back to factory equipment ( like your missing Cat and Air Pump). You might want to check if VA has a similar policy.

I think VA has something like that. I prob sure I wont have any issues passing when everything fixed. The car was well kept by the PO with only 80xxx miles. I was more worried about failing because of the aftermarket DP and HFC.
