New member - building a Chump Car

Hi everyone. I use a porsche board all the time and its a great way to meet new people and learn. I decided that Im going to build a second gen RX7 and enter into the chump car race series. I know a lot about some cars, but I no nothing about the rx7 and rotary engines. I looked and 89 has 160Hp while older cars have less, so I will be looking for a 89+. It cant be too knew or it wont qualify for the chump car 'value' rule. I race several types of cars so I know what Im getting myself into. I can tear a car down and build a cage, etc.

So what gives the 89 and newer more power? It will be easier if I can find any year car and bump it to a 89.

What needs to be done to make these cars reliable? ie what maintenance item is important. For example on the Porsche 944 the tensioner belt is a very important maintenance item.

Chump car really means a stock car ( plus safety gear ), but they are long races, 14 to 24 hours on a weekend, so you need spare parts and something reliable. Being a rotoary engine a larger oil cooler maybe?

Im open to suggestions.....

The 89 (S5) makes more power over the 86-88 (S4) primarily due to a revised intake manifold, higher compression and a better ECU. Cross series swaps are a pain in the butt because almost all the wiring was changed between S4 and S5.

Maintenance is like any other older vehicle. Nothing needs to be done to make the car reliable as long as it was maintained properly.

You won't need a larger oil cooler.
