Unhappy New to here with problems

Sup yall. Names Christian. Just bought an 85 rx7 12a and noticed this seems to be one of the best forums for answers so I thought I'd sign up. I have a few questions and don't know if I should post them here, but until I have 5 it wont let me post anywhere else so here goes

I just got my rx7 a few weeks ago. Everything seemed fine until today when I noticed the battery voltage meter slowly draining. My wife drove it to work ok, but when she tried to drive home it wouldn't start. She had it jumped, but the battery wouldn't charge and was draining slowly. I figured it was the alternator and told her to drive around the block of her work for a symptoms check. She said car was acting a little weird(horn honked when brake was applied) After hearing that it worries me that it may be an electrical problem of some sort. Any reply with ideas will help

Thanks

For something crazy like that, you're going to have to sit down and just run tests on the beast. You need to disconnect the battery and charge it up. If it doesn't hold at least 12.8 volts after that, it's no good. If OK, get the battery back in the car and crank it up...shouldn't be a problem...IF IT IS, you've got a grounding problem somewhere.

If the car starts normally, then get a screwdriver and see if the back of the alternator shaft will "pull" it. If it does, alternator is at least working. Just checking the idiot light or the volt meter in the car will also tell the story 90% of the time.

After that, it really is a matter of breaking out the Hayne's manual and then running down circuits if the problem is still there...I've never had the problem you describe. Maybe one of the other mods here have.

ps. Welcome aboard! Hit the links in Rx-7Doctor sig and start reading if you haven't got a Hayne's manual yet for your FB!

Yea, WELCOME

As are cars age, new and wonderful problems arise, like ^ said these problems with wiring take time to sort out.

thanks

Thanks guys. Hopefully it's just the alt. Would hate to have to go through the wiring. I have the chilton manual and am good with cars, but that may be out of my reach. If by chance I had to take it in to figure out the wiring problem would that be an arm and a leg? Lemme know if can.....I'll definately start with the batt and alt first though

THANKS
