OR Loud popping sound while driving

I recently purchased an 87 turbo 2 and while i was driving it hard, I heard a loud pop when i shifted gears between 2nd to third? I know what a BOV sounds like so im ruling that out. I wonder if its possible that it was a misfire? I would shift around 6500-7k when id hear the loud pop? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a backfire. Pretty common in an RX7, since they're usually tuned to run rich to avoid engine detonation. A list of mods would be helpful to see if the previous owner would have a reason to tune it rich (e.g. if he installed a free flowing exhaust, like a test pipe and a cat-less/catback exhaust) and what ECU/EMS you're running on it.

^Now that's a mod list!!! You got an awesome car!

The cat-less exhaust and removed anti-afterburn features cause it to run rich when you lift off the throttle. Backfiring isn't a problem, that's just how it works. If don't want to make the noise, let off the throttle slower or don't accelerate as hard right before the shift.

Thanks. So in otherwords, if i drive it hard and hear that pop, i dont have anything to worry about. Im a serious noob with these cars, what is "removed anti-afterburn"

Half the fun of an RX-7 is shooting fireballs out the exhaust. Not many other cars will do it so readily. Mazda installed a anti-afterburn valve in the exhaust manifold of the RX-7, to prevent unburnt fuel from being ignited in the tail pipe. This feature is restrictive, and robs performance so most aftermarket exhaust remove this feature.

Yup. It's normal. And cool!

"Anti-afterburn" is a feature built into stock throttle bodies to prevent backfiring/afterburn. It just limits how fast the throttle can be closed. You can do the same thing by releasing the throttle a little more gradually.

I think it's time to dump a bunch of oil in the combustion chambers, then warm it up in front of his house.
