Interested in getting advice for 2 RX-7's

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan but will be home in a few months. I was refered to this site by someone here who told me that "Rotary Ressurection" was a great person to talk to about engines. Here is the issues awaiting me:

First, I have an 88 convertable. My brother burned up the clutch while I am away and it needs work on replacing the top and different things to improve the looks. I need to work on the exhaust. Any recommendations?

Second, I picked up an 86 RX-7 hatchback. It is in great shape but has a blown apex seal. I got a few options now. I can do a rebuild, buy a new engine, or drop in a V8. I have 2 V8s that I could get my hands on cheaply. One is a 318 V8 out of a 77 dodge pickup or a 383 supercharged highway patrol engine out of a 74 plymouth. Considering actual size of the engines does anyone think either of them would work? I understand it would require a conversion. How much of the original parts under the hood would I keep or change out? I would like to hear your oponion on what might be best. I do have a couple months to decide but I want to do a great job with it with as low of cost as possible. Thanks.

What's the question?

You'll want to visit the "Other Engine Conversions" subforum to get an idea as to how these engines would fit.

The thing is, in my opinion anyway, all those old V8s are just lumps of junk compared to the new LS series. Why use a 100 year old design?

The question on the 88 is mainly looking for other opinions on what I can do for it. I know I am going to have to replace exhaust pipes on it. I know the question is a bit broad but being over here makes it difficult to think of specifics. Also, I am just amazed I get internet. even if it is sometimes slower than dial up.

Without more information it is hard to suggest anything. If the car is otherwise fine and just needs a clutch and exhaust, maybe replace the clutch and exhaust and then drive it? *shrug*
