I think my timing is out of whack?

It takes me a good 30 seconds to a minute to get my car to start. I have to choke it and turn the key over that long an it will finally fire up and start. It is a 1983 Mazda Rx-7 with a stock 12A motor. It is idling at about 1500 to 1800 RPMS. Could this be timing or ignition or anything else. Im new to this rotary enigine and not used to a carb. I tryed adjusting carb from a thread on here. I got it to idle at that and cant get it no lower. I would like it to crank up faster and idle at 750 to 900. Anyone got any good advice. If so please reply or message me. thanks and thanks to all the replys on my other post

Check for Vacuum leak, a vacuum leak would explain the high idle and choke to start.

The Choke increases the vacuum to pull the fuel into the intake, and it will cause the idle to be high.

Timing could also do it but it would start easy.

Make sure the Throttle cable is loose on the carb, it could be holding the throttle open some.

OR Vacuum leak!

I would have to agree that sounds just like a vacuum leak. mine was the same way. be sure and check the three that go under the back.

Checked for vaccum leaks

I found one hose that is above the exahaust manifold and its about the size of my pinkie. There is no hose there it does suck when motor is running. Does anyone know where it runs too its pointing down toward ground. Then I found another one towards the right bottom of carb a little smaller then the other one it is connected to a little round cannister thing and inside is a small screen there is also no hose connected to it. But on both you can see there is supposed to be a hose. I looked everywhere couldnt find where either hooked up. I dont think they hook together the one by manifold is bigger. Any suggestions Thanks Robbie

vacuum lines

Does anyone have a diagram of all the vacuum lines on the motor? Or could you tell me where to go to look at one? thanks

How do you know if your seals are bad? How much to repair them?

Hi I was wondering how you knew if your apex seals were going bad or have gone bad? How much does it cost to have all new seals put in? thanks

Holy crap, more newbies from IA. This is getting crazy (4 or 5 so far). I would offer to help you out but you're what 45 minutes from Ottumwa? That means you're almost 2 hours from me. The crazy thing is, if you had some pics of your possible problem area we would be able to tell you where the hose goes. Also, for a rebuild you can buy the stuff for ~1K, considerably less if you know exactly what you need. You can also spend considerably more if you end up needing to replace housings.

Have you tried just turning your idle screw down?? 1500 - 1800 is way to high to Idle. Summer time I try and keep mine around 800 - 900 winter time a little higher.

Rem the choke will also rev the engine higher until she warms up and then shuts the choke off. I have to use the choke almost everytime except when the engine is warm I use the choke to help her start up. But you can adjust the choke so she just stays a little higher than the idle until she warms up.

But if your new to the old style choke and carb. Becareful to much choke and you could flood her. They can be a pain when they want to.

I've had my 83 gx for 23 years and she still gives me a headache at times.

I'm trying to find the proper timing. Everything lines up on the pully, but something just isn't right? Having a hard time finding something on timing adjustments or advanced adjustments.

Good luck

M.
