I can't pass smog

I can't pass smog
Ok I have been searching the forum for about two days now. I went to smog my car in reno nevada today and I failed really bad. The guy at the testing place said my car was running really rich. The car is stock except a intake and I'm not real sure what kind it is since it was there when I bought the car. I have all the emmissons stuff still on the car. Here is the stats on the smog test.
idle speed CO 7.44% greater than 1.20%
high speed CO 8.80% greater than 1.20%
Idle speed HC 1924 greater than 220 parts per million
high speed HC 1034 greater than 220 parts per million
Now I have read how to fake the test with alcohle and what not, but I would like to pass it for real. I'm not real good with rotorys yet, so if there is someone that could help me or someone in reno that can tell me a GOOD rotory mechanic in the close area, that would be great. Thanks everyone.

It could be a few things. Your cat may be bad, the air pump may be damaged internally, or something might just not be hooked up properly. The first thing I'd do is remove the cat and air pump and inspect them. A Haynes shop manual or the factory service manual (FSM, free to download) can help you with it.

It could be a few things. Your cat may be bad, the air pump may be damaged internally, or something might just not be hooked up properly. The first thing I'd do is remove the cat and air pump and inspect them. A Haynes shop manual or the factory service manual (FSM, free to download) can help you with it.
so after a tune up new exhaust and O2 sensor I'll try again and hope I pass.

The other thing you can do to help pass the idle test is adjust the variable resistor. First jumper the 2-wire green plug near the leading coil with a small piece of wire. This prevents ECU corrections while you make adjustments. Then take a screw driver and turn the resistor towards 'L' (behind air box, on shock tower), while the engine is idling. Go slowly, and wait until you start to hear the idle change/drop. Take it as far lean (L) as you can, while still maintaining a smooth idle. Your HC & CO numbers will improve with the adjustment, but obviously you can only go so far before the car will no longer idle. When done, remove the jumper wire.
