CA how to remove sound/ tar from floor

I want to reduce my cars weight. I was told that the sound deading material/ tar weighs a lot... What is the best way to remove it?

Kerosene removes it very easily. Just be careful.

However if you remove it, the car will now sound like a tin can. If you are daily driving the thing I suggest you leave the tar in place. It really doesn't weigh that much. Only about 20 LBs.

For only 20 lbs i guess it is not worth the hassle. Thanks

you can also use dry ice. Just let it sit on top and chisel away after a couple minutes. Its WAYYY easier

Honestly, I've done both and kerosene is by far the easiest method. Just brush it on, then scrape off the goo with a putty knife. It's easier to keep kerosene as well since it doesn't sublimate.

When I was stationed in North Dakota, it got down to -103degrees and I remember it all that material would just crack and peal off. Maybe I should make a road trip up there in the winter.....LOL.

you make it sound like anyone could just go to ND anytime durring the winter and encounter -103 weather. and if it were that cold I would probably have other worries besides the sound deadening in my car =)

-103* is not even survivable conditions for a human being. Your skin would freeze in a matter of seconds.

I never thought kerosene would work though, is it that corrosive??

i would say the cakeman is right since he seems to be the only one saying he has done both. but since guys not doing it doesn't matter. good for future reference though.

It just dissolves the tar and turns it into a goo. The only annoyance of course is that it is flammable.
